Hither and Thither

"Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver knows he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should

I never knew those were the lyrics. I can see why you'd be uncomfortable singing that when - let's face it - there are plenty of other tunes they can go with.

Also, he might like to have a think about the lyrics to this:

Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around
It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
And ain't it the truth babe?
Under my thumb
It's a squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways
It's down to me
Yes it is
The way she does just what she's told down to me
The change has come
She's under my thumb

I have never felt comfortable with those lyrics myself. Great tune like.

Indeed. One of my favourites (I love the Aftermath album). The lyrics passed me by till I took a closer listen a couple of years ago, though. I seem to recall that I though them as bittersweet, but now they look peevish, petulant and prattish (I love a bit of alliteration, me)

Union Gap, anyone? ???

LMFAO why has it taken them so long  a classic case of virtue signalling then

…….. cancel culture and virtue signalling both being tired phrases meant to dismiss something which anyone with half a brain will laugh at every time they see them. Life’s too complicated to be categorised with meaningless gibberish.

I didn’t say they are not current or bang on trend. My main point is that life is more complicated than that. Not everything is down to black or white. There are (more than 50) shades of grey.

The only one's making it complicated are the types you're defending the cancel culturists and virtue signallers

In other words "I just wanted to watch 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' and I could have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids."

The irony of Grandad here using a meme from a decade ago

Speaking of irony, this is a discussion about the Rolling Stones' live song choices and someone is using 'grandad' as an insult.

I think that we can safely assume that all parties involved are probably old enough to remember when a meme was a graffitied drawing of a big nosed bloke peeking over a wall with the words 'Kilroy was Here' written below.

I can't say I'm bothered and the lyrics are a bit "Jimmy Saville" in modern context so I get the reasoning. Equally, I'm not planning on going to a Stones gig anytime soon and hearing the song is asking Alexa away if I wanted to. I'm a Gimme shelter fan anyway.

My only observation is the mental gymnastics going on where Krept and Konan singing about drug dealing and shooters with the England team was defended in the some quarters which the Stones don't get. Ah well, there will be another BANNING along soon enough. I'll pop along to homebase for a new pitchfork.
