If you want to see a great singer, stay in and watch the voice. If you want to see music that speaks to you, has soul, heart and understanding played by one of the truly great bands..... Go see the Roses

If you are complaining about the vocals then you don't get it!

Bollox.

The Smiths.
Buzzcocks.
Magazine.
Joy Division (yeah, really).

+ loads more. Many would say that Liam Gallagher's voice was a great rock and roll voice, especially on the first album.

Look beyond Madchester.

easy tiger

look I worship at the altar of Stephen Patrick but I know plenty find his voice annoying, likewise Curtis' style was pretty unique

Sumner is almost as bad as Brown, Noel s voice uber weak as well

Hucknall the best manc voice

What a load of tosh.

Now, Peter Tosh. He was a good singer.

I'm inclined to agree with Badfish. Can't see much wrong with what he says.

And Hamilton, knowing what a fan you are of 'The Voice', I think you secretly agree with him too.

Finally awake after crawling in at 2:00am after a fantastic day/night.

The Stone Roses once again sounded fantastic...Yes, the vocals are not great but I cannot believe the moaning on here, Ian Brown has been around for donkeys years and has never been the best singer, so it is hardly new news...And I cannot understand why people are so bothered, the Roses have always been more than just singing!

Miles Kane and Johnny Marr were pretty good but PIL were shite...Utter shite. The only highlight of the PIL set was watching Reni dancing at the side of the stage. But I cannot complain too much as I got free booze and even had some food from a burger van which comically enough they ended up paying me to eat!...Just as well as it was awful.

But back to the Roses, since their comeback they have been incredible live and even the more softer songs were beefed up and sounded good. After seeing Mani looking almost nervous in previous occasions he finally looked quite relaxed last night...Squire was his normal guitar hero self. But for me, the real genius is Reni, watching him drum is an absolute joy.

I cannot wait to see them again.

Albion, England & Stone Roses forever.

Don't tell everyone Pogue!

Seriously, it's a silly remark. Shaun Ryder can't sing, but he uses his voice to create power and atmosphere. We could all name front men that can't sing, but can use their voices like instruments.

I was dancing to the Roses, Charlatans, Mondays, Inspiral Carpets etc in the clubs up North in the early 90s. I know exactly what the Roses and that whole scene was about. To suggest that somehow if you wish to criticize the Roses today you don't understand what they are about is just a load of Pete Tosh.

As mentioned before, I agree with your point about Reni. He was the most entertaining guy on the stage - looked like he still cared about it.

I went Friday, so I hope they put stuff right for Saturday, but based on what I saw then - a real let down for me.

To you maybe but i think you are missing something that it meant to others, myself included.

All those bands you mention created something incredible in the early 90's despite the fact that none had a decent singer and many had terrible ones. The quality of singing was not and still is not the point of what was going on. If you are still going on about the quality of singing 25 years later then to me you missed and are still missing what was great about the music of the time.

Sounds to me that there were plenty of people who went and had a fantastic time. I went to see them twice earlier this year and they created something amazing both times. I am sure I could have sat back and criticized them for their shortcomings but instead I celebrated the power of a band unrivaled in so many areas. There are very few bands you could not pick holes in what they do if you choose , ultimately it is up to you to make that choice.

It does kind of beg the question: What were you expecting?

I'm glad you had a great time. Guess I just have different expectations (or didn't see these things they way you did.)

I've seen many reformed bands from that era and before, and they just weren't cutting the mustard for me.

I am afraid they balance on a knife edge between genius and ordinary. I saw both in Melbourne earlier on in the year. they started with John too loud and sounding a bit loose. I decided to dance and have a sing song with my mates and make the best of it. Then after Fools Gold they slid straight into pure genius and produced some of the best live music i have every heard (despite a singer who struggles to hold a note) and conduct an atmosphere like nothing i have seen before complete with Ian chucking a bin at a bouncer for throwing someone out.

I wasn't there this weekend so I can't really comment on that particular gig but most I have heard from had a great time despite the bands limitations. Like you say though different expectations from what one looks for in a live band.

John Squire...Fool's Gold, Made of Stone, This is the One - he sounded excellent. Breaking into Heaven, I am the Resurrection, stunning. But you'd gone by then.

Raw Power - well, as has been said, it wasn't loud enough, so some of this was lost here.

Mani did his usual chest beating, I love you, type gestures to the crowd throughout. The others were always a bit stand-offish.

I think we expected different things, and saw different things.

Anyway, get yourself over to Cycling Geeks and tell SB that you want one or two of the caps that he's organising...

I thought they were great, in fact exceeded expectation, I Am the Resurrection to end the show was simply superb. Stood close to the speaker and the sound was great, took a wonder to get closer to the front and the sound was shocking so moved back to speaker, not a great venue. Liked the fact they didn't do the 'phoney' on-core, it was all about the music. 9/10

It is a shame you were let down on Friday, maybe you should have gone on Saturday as, mediocre vocals aside, they sounded superb...And this is from someone who squirmed his way to the front so whilst singing along and enjoying myself had the battle to stay on his feet!!

Whilst I understand that is a reply to another poster, I have to add following from what I say above, is that they had everything you have listed and more. There was genuine love flowing in both directions from fans and band. I think may have just been unlucky.

by the by one thing that gutted me about heaton park was this nonsense with an 'inner ring' so that unless you got there early and got a wrist band, you couldn t get to the front

now not only is this lame but no one had mentioned it so for maybe the most important gig i ve been too I couldnt do what I always do and have at least a third of the gig at the front

anyhoo, sounds like the finsbury park massive didnt have this nonsense so good stuff
