We had 4 nice sunny days on holiday in Eastbourne last week , this rainy weather is typical up north for most of the year.

Yep. The norm for the northwest I'm afraid. Someone from Southport (just North of Liverpool) remarked the other day when i said we were desperate for rain that it had only refined twice there this month. Once for 8 days and once for 7.

In my yoof I Greyhounded around The US, at the end of a long hot summer, here.

Over there I extended the summer still further.

I was doing an overnight journey, and put a tape into my Walkman (I know). The opening track was a thunderstorm.
I reckon I'd gone at least 5 months without hearing any 'proper' rain.
It sounded fantastic and was the only time I had a moment of home sickness.

Love the fact you have to tell us where southport is.

Sounds like one for my bucket list.

Love the start of The Doors Riders on the Storm for that very reason. Utterly soothing.

Also like the sound of a train in the distance, just a pity that the main line into Victoria passes the end of my garden so it's not so distant!

I love the sound of gales not little breezes but full on proper owling blowing like a hooligan gales. We used to go up on to the downs to watch storms coming in when I was a kid so I suppose its a throw back

Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville ;
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits !
Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,
Ô le chant de la pluie ! ...
(Paul Verlaine)

It should be pointed out that Verlaine lived in England for a while and hated it, especially Sundays so wet Sundays would have driven him to even more absinthe.

Watching the extremes of weather arriving from the channel is one of the things I miss the most about having moved up to London. Here it's just on you in a flash rather than the expectant hesitancy of knowing its coming in from the sea.

i like the LOUD steady ticking of a clock in the bedroom, very soothing

Yeah that's all well and good until you suffer from insomnia like I do and the ticking of the clock signals another sodding second, minute, hour without goddamn sleep!
Many a time piece have been banished to silicon heaven by meeting an untimely end with a wall or the floor.
