According to Wikipedia he didn’t.

On 1 September 2003 Sobhraj was spotted by a journalist for The Himalayan Times in a casino in Kathmandu. The journalist followed him for a fortnight and then wrote a news report in The Himalayan Times with photographs. The Nepal police saw the report, raided the Casino Royale in Yak and Yeti hotel and arrested a blissfully unaware Sobhraj, who was still gambling there. According to the newspaper, Sobhraj had returned to Kathmandu to set up a mineral water business. The Nepal police reopened the double murder case from 1975 and got Sobhraj sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kathmandu district court on 20 August 2004 for the murders of Bronzich and Carrière.

I read another piece as he was there to set up a deal with Chinese officials. But lets be honest who knows what the real truth is other than the man himself. I have no doubt the end they showed was not how it went down, but they needed to wrap the series up to near conclusion.

Pretty good but thought they overdid it by showing how he killed each victim, got a bit repetitive. Was a bit overlong. Also, were there no Dutch/German actors available? Still enjoyed it though!

Definitely missed a trick by not casting Schteve McClaren to play the part of Cloggie Knippenberg in his later years.

Enjoyed this, in part because of the repulsion Sobhraj generated. But also in part because of the design -- primarily clothes, but also the cars indicated what a brilliant range was around there rather than the identitkit offerings of today -- and the music, I loved the way that it was so of that era but I'm not sure I could recognise anything.
On a similar note, we've been watching it pretty much alongside The Queen's Gambit, which also deserves a special mention for all sorts of things, but very much including the music and costume design.

For those interested in this series and the story behind it, there's a Podcast series on BBC Sounds called Bad People and they've done three specials on The Serpent - two include interviews with Paul Testar, one of the show's producers and the other with Julie Clark, who wrote On the Trail of the Serpent. Well worth a listen.

Regards the series itself, I struggled a bit with the first few episodes - didn't like the carnage he was causing and couldn't help worrying about my daughters ever going backpacking - but was eventually hooked.
