The secret to set piece success

This is the one thing that really winds me up about the Albion, I honestly can't remember a single goal from a set piece all season which for a top six side is ridiculous. Middlesborough scored from 2 corners which must be more than we have scored at home all season, if Dunk could get the same amount of goals as last year we could be in the top two.

Does Stephens against QPR count?

Nearly 2 years ago I wrote:-

I have worked out the corner signals though:-

1 hand 1 finger raised - Ball kicked over the last persons head, out for a throw in.
1 hand 5 fingers raised - Ball kicked over the last persons head, out for a throw in.
Both hands 1 finger on each raised - Ball kicked over the last persons head, out for a throw in.
Both hands all fingers raised - Ball kicked over the last persons head, out for a throw in.
No hands raised - kick ball straight at near post defender.

Does 4 different versions of 'kick ball straight at near post defender' constitute progress or regress?

I have no idea why you lot (I stopped a few weeks ago) get excited by the prospect of a corner or in 'range' free-kick.

This season the team have scored some fabulous, free flowing, attacking goals, many from pin point final balls.
Yet dead ball play has been woeful, predictable and frankly amateurish.

All set pieces have been variations of dreadful this season.
Made all the more annoying by the fact that goals from corners kept the team up, last season.

One thing that Hyypia excelled at was getting the team to score from set pieces (mostly corners).

You're giving the gormless Finn WAY too much credit IMHO. A corner's a corner. It's one of the basics of football. Only Albion corner-taker I've ever been impressed with is Darren Currie in the Withdean era who looked for all the world like he was trying to score direct from every corner he ever took. Came pretty close loadsa times

Also IMHO the Withdean era also produced our last great free-kick-on-the-edge-of-the-box specialist (barring the odd flash from KLL).Step forward Richard Carpenter. No airs and graces about the bloke, just belted it hell for leather into the net. NOBODY fancied getting in the way of one of those.

If I'm wrongly giving too much credit to Sami, maybe I should be sticking the knife in CH. We have the joint worse set piece goal scoring record in the Championship:

Sort it out Chris & coaching team!!!

Initial impressions are that Knockaert looks pretty promising for sorting that one out
Unless he wants to fit in with his teammates.

Burnley have 18 goals from either set pieces/penalties/own goals; we have 4. That's why we are not top of the league.

Free Kick 1 – Lua Lua lines it up. Ball sails 4 ft over the bar
Free Kick 2 – Ah, but now Lua Lua has laid a marker. He’ll have settled his nerves and his eye will be in. He sets the ball and… Murphy blazes it 5 ft over the bar.

I’ve never understood that.

The best free kick taker of the Withdean era was without doubt Paul Watson... He had a magic wand that he waved every time he took a free kick and it landed exactly where Bobby Z wanted it to be put away...

Corners are overrated as a scoring opportunity.

Found this online relating to the 2010 World Cup

There were 145 goals scored in the World Cup.
There were 627 corners
271 corners connected with an attacking player (43%).
Of those, 9 goals were scored from a corner played into the penalty area resulting in a shot.
That’s a ratio of 1 goal scored for every 70 corners taken.

How quickly you forget Spanish Dave who scored every penalty he took for us, and the exquisite over the wall, under the bar shot against Palace. His other free kicks got assists too.
We even got him trending on Twitter after Blackburn away when he earned us a point with a penalty in the 93rd minute. No pressure Dave.
