The Saw Doctors take Cleveland

I am halfway through a five-gigs-in-five-nights-in-five-cities road trip, and I got a major surprise this evening when I saw the reception the boys from Tuam got in Cleveland. I've seen them quite a few times but this was certainly an eye-opener.

As they have now been around for more than 17 years but have never really had a big hit, especially this side of the pond, I didn't think the Saw Doctors would be particularly well-known in Ohio but was I mistaken! The House of Blues was completely sold out - and the biggest surprise was who the crowd consisted of. It was 90% teenagers, many of whom were in nappies when the first record was released. But it seems the band have won over a whole new generation of fans. It did cross my mind that perhaps it was student night or something, but from the very first note they all knew all the words and the place went crazy. They played for more than two hours and the frenzy never let up.

I was left feeling very old, but I was also delighted for the band who loved every minute of it. I was worried they may be thinking about calling it a day but I think they might just move to Ohio instead. But then I gather they are also sold out in Chicago and New York as well.

Anyway, next up for me is the mighty Superchick in Detroit - but only if Ohio learns how to plow its roads.

HEY jUAN, DOES YOUR BOSS KNOW YOU ARE GALLIVANTING ALL OVER THE MID_WEST ATTENDING WHAT MAY BE SOME VERY QUESTIONABLE ACTIVITES.
OR ARE YOU TRYING TO WORK UP SOME FIRE AND BRIMSTONE.
STRONGLY ADVISE THAT YOU DON'T RETURN TO S. ONTARIO UNTIL AFTER THE WEEKEND. MORE DEVASTATING STORMS FORECAST.

Does he know? He better had - he's paying. This is 'study leave.'

And the weather is probably worse here than in Ontario. Apparently there were 610 accidents in Ohio yesterday. I saw a couple of them happen.

But I won't be back until Monday. If I can get to Detroit in time, it is Superchick this afternoon at the Joe Louis Arena, and then tomorrow it is BarlowGirl at Michigan State University in Lansing.

Wonder does "N17" go down as well with people who've no idea what the N17 is, or what the songs about...

Interesting point. I saw The Streets do a free open air gig in Berlin and I wondered if anyone knew what the songs were about. It seems the Germans get some of the themes, but not others....but they do seem keen to find out. I had a very funny conversation trying to explain what a geezer is to a local......and it is actually quite a difficult thing to explain.

They opened with it and it went down a storm. I don't know if they knew what it meant but they didn't really care. Huge Irish ancestry around here though. Mind you, I did hear a couple admitting they didn't have a clue what a 'presentation boarder' was.
