Chicken Sniffer 3rd Class
I am halfway through a five-gigs-in-five-nights-in-five-cities road trip, and I got a major surprise this evening when I saw the reception the boys from Tuam got in Cleveland. I've seen them quite a few times but this was certainly an eye-opener.
As they have now been around for more than 17 years but have never really had a big hit, especially this side of the pond, I didn't think the Saw Doctors would be particularly well-known in Ohio but was I mistaken! The House of Blues was completely sold out - and the biggest surprise was who the crowd consisted of. It was 90% teenagers, many of whom were in nappies when the first record was released. But it seems the band have won over a whole new generation of fans. It did cross my mind that perhaps it was student night or something, but from the very first note they all knew all the words and the place went crazy. They played for more than two hours and the frenzy never let up.
I was left feeling very old, but I was also delighted for the band who loved every minute of it. I was worried they may be thinking about calling it a day but I think they might just move to Ohio instead. But then I gather they are also sold out in Chicago and New York as well.
Anyway, next up for me is the mighty Superchick in Detroit - but only if Ohio learns how to plow its roads.
