I always liked the term ‘BrindiePop’ - covered more genres and more bands over the period ‘93 to ‘98.

I was late teens/early twenties at the time and loved 99% of it. Still do.

Britpop is a strange beast. I don't think I've ever seen a band say that they were britpop. They all claim to have not been part of it.

It seems to be a retrospective label. I don't remember anyone at the time talking about britpop. We all (or the people i knew at least) just said we liked indie and that was enough to cover Oasis, Blur, pulp, suede, the verve, the manics, radiohead, supergrass, ocean colour scene, the stone roses, primal scream, p.j harvey, spirtualized, the super furries etc etc along with massive attack, portishead, the chemical brothers, the prodigy, leftfield etc.

Still, britpop or indie, it was a great time to be a teen.

This list you’ve provided shows that era was quite a special and fertile period for British music.There‘s also quite a bit of variety in there as well.

I've heard that it's possible to like Duran Duran and other music as well.

John Taylor is a brilliant bass player.

I read that DD played a punk gig and opened with Planet Earth (I think) it started totally dark and then they launched in. The punks had no idea what was happening.

I saw DD at The Dome around the time of Planet Earth. Knew nothing about them other than that song. Hard to tell how good they were because of all the screaming girls.

Every era is special and fertile. People mostly get locked into the era when they were teenagers. I was a teenager in the 70s, but have found brilliant music in every decade since.

Fair point. I was a teen in the 80s but I have always argued there’s always great music around. In some respects there’s even more as with age my mind has become more open and receptive and understanding of stuff I wouldn’t have previously considered

Yeah I agree, Oasis were incredibly exciting when they came out.

Did the Knebworth gig which was outstanding.
Also saw them at Earls Court (supported by the Verve), and at a Jools Holland Later special.

My recollection of the time was that there were two parallel (main)streams of glorious music around to be enjoyed in the mid-90's. There was Britpop, and there was also a BURGEONING Electronic Dance Music scene. All those wondrous albums like Dubnobasswithmyheadman (Underworld), Leftism (Leftfield), The Fat Of The Land (The Prodigy) and Exit Planet Dust (The Chemical Brothers). What a time to be alive!

And such a shame that the Essential Musjc Festival(s) at Stanmer Park got zapped by Foot And Mouth Disease restrictions. Had some fantastic daze out there

Saw 808 State at Stanmer Park, with famous actor Mark Strong standing in front of me, then known mostly for Our Friends in the North.

No it wasn't Gossip, the band I'm talking about were a lot more obscure, but the lead singer did look like Gossip's singer slightly slimmer. They had one sort of popular song that was really annoying I'm sure it was about a lollypop are at least had the word pop or fizz in it. I can't remember the name and I can't find any clues online which is frustrating me lol.

It was a really good festival. I went when it was in Brighton and also when it moved to Hackney….I think. Always had good line ups
