260m to 600m people worldwide every year kill people each year from seasonal flu with a vaccine. Covid 19 has taken 9000 far. That is without a vaccine which will be here by next winter. It is a very weak strain and will be killed

A lot of elderly people can’t get their head round it though, and not just the stupid ones. They aren’t being wilfully selfish, they don’t see it in terms of being a risk to others. As ever, people on here are quick to rush to judgement.

The 1918 Spanish flu was more lethal than this virus is likely to be. I doubt there was much they could do about it back then, but let it run its course.

Its great we have more information and technology now to combat this virus, but its a fine line being sensible, taking a lot of precautions but still enjoying life, and locking yourself away for weeks with a lot of bog rolls.

The next couple of months will be shit, but there’s always a chance this will peak and fade by early June, be held in abeyance by the summer (apparently the virus has a thin membrane that dislikes heat) and by the time the second wave comes, preexisting drugs will be used to cure a lot of the more serious cases. And testing could well show that up to 75% of people will have had the virus and built up antibodies against it without even knowing they had it. Instant herd immunity at least for a few months.

An actual vaccine may be 18-24 months away, but that doesn’t mean that the world will be living like this for that long.

None of this is my personal opinion; it’s taken from various virologists.

Thats one of the more reassuring things I’ve read lately. Re: the thin membrane point, have you got a reference for this? I’m not doubting you, I’m just very interested to read about this theory as, like everyone else on here, I don’t fancy living like a hermit for the next 18 months.

I’ll have a quick look around online, but my Twitter feed is currently awash with the world’s experts in viruses that I’m checking hourly. It was an interview with one of them earlier today, but offhand I can’t remember with whom.

The vast majority of elderly citizens voted leave in a recent referendum and claim to have done so 'in the best interests' of those younger people that will outlive them.

Well now it's time to walk it like you talk it. They have a duty to stay indoors for the foreseeable future and behave 'in the best interests' of those younger people that hope to outlive them.

Any that don't are bloody hypocrites.

The reason for the panic is governments and nations are just winging it as they have no clue so are taking absolute worst case scenarios

Your medical knowledge is totally wrong and millions would not die, for the love of christ **** off as NSC was positively a better place till you came along.

80% could get infected, they say. In UK thats rougly 54 million. If, like in Italy, 10% of these need intensive care, you have 5,4 million people where the majority need ventilators. From what I've read you got 5400 and even if there's another 5000 locked up somewhere... its chaos.

If a very large amount of the population gets sick at the same time, then yes millions would likely die. What do you think these measures are about? You think countries like France, Italy and China lock up their people, crash their economies, go to war laws to save x hundred thousands of people?

I get all the impositions of life at the moment but I worry the government has lost sight of the meaning and purpose of life, It is not simply to stay in for months on end scared of a virus. It is to LIVE, be free and enjoy. This is their big issue. There comes a tipping point when it is not about digging in for months and years on end but actually living a life. More so for over 70s imo and there will come a point people will just take their chances

That is the real challenge they have

Quality of life

That is what I do. Make calculated decsions but not terrified of living or what is the point ?

What is being done is to conserve life so you can have the quality at a later date

Almost. What is being done, is to conserve the lives of OTHERS so that THEY can have the quality at a later date.

Keep your head down for a bit and this will all blow over. Stay safe. The Chinese seem to have cracked it in just a few weeks. I'm increasingly minded we are suffering mostly with a coms problem right now, with a bit of logistics bum-ache thrown in, rather than the end of civilisation as we know it.

Good grief. Is this what your little tantrum is based on? Your figures for flu deaths are out by 599,400,000.

Clown.

This isn’t the interview I read, but this month-old article about a virologist mentions the thin membrane.

Not sure clarify and is there really any need to be abusive every time. You might want to address that to have any sort of a debate it really does not help things x

From what I've read

Stop right there as you are clearly reading rubbish on Twitter or Facebook which is more than likely what you put on there as well

You’ve announced that the CV is ‘weak’ compared with flu, because that kills 600 MILLION people a year.

It doesn’t. It kills up to 600 THOUSAND.

Your casually thrown figures are wrong by over 599,000,000.

This is the kind of stupid Facebook style misinformation, that leads confused folk, to ignore the real dangers and warnings.

If it was guaranteed that ""only"" 100-300k in a country the size of yours would die from this, I would agree that measures of this degree were debatable.

However in this extraordinary scenario that is happening... if 80% of the population got this virus in a very short while - say another month or two - MILLIONS of people would likely die from it just in the UK. While I hope some type of system is put together for the oldest and the youngest so they are not entirely locked up for months, the measure of... removing freedom is temporarily necessary.

When this pandemic is over we're gonna need to put an extra eye on our governments though, making sure they dont abuse their new powers and skills in harmful ways.

.......but you think it’s ok for a bloke to go to the pub tonight, despite his pregnant, teacher wife being a bit angry about it.

When I first worked for a US bank, the fact they used ‘m’ to signify thousands rather than millions (‘mm’ for millions) confused me too initially...........maybe that’s what he meant.......[emoji2369][emoji2369]

Yes, while its not perfect and I wouldnt have done it myself I'm not gonna start bashing people for doing relatively petty mistakes/dumb decisions during this. Those mistakes/decisions will happen in millions and millions until the big apparatus locks people up. While I think EVERYONE should be very careful and risk averting, I'm not waving the "you're gonna kill us all!" stick at any single individual.

Are you sure 600m every year? World population is around 7.5bn. That’s about 8% of the worlds population every year? Human kind won’t be around in 15 years time? And that’s just the flu, let alone Covid 19 and cancer?
