Not really. Do you know or care about who owns your local?

Yes actually. But Shoreham must be unique then in that we do know who owns them, who the landlords are (yes I know the landlord isn't always the owner to someone elses point above), and where the beer comes from, and even more how its kept. Not that I drink, but its nice to be able to support local, non brewery owned where possible, and even moreso those who brew locally. But I'm obviously in the minority...

Amazing that wondering what percentage of pub goers know or care who actually owns their pub is now classified as a generalisation. Some going, that!

Still, this is a thread about Weatherspoon's, so we all know exactly what sort of idiotic generalisations will turn up in no time at all, don't we? And the ruffled feathers when they're challenged!

Spoons. You walk in because it is cheap, simple. And for that reason they keep it cheap, sell a lot more and so buy more at better prices.
I know a few people in the trade.
One brewer of a national brand who refuses to sell to Spoons as they want to pay so little for his beer.
I can buy a barrel of ale, 72 pints, for a little over £70.
Even trade prices for Fosters is £1.38 from a wholesaler so expect they pay well under a £1 a pint.
Deducting VAT from the sale price of £2.60 would still give a profit of £1.20 a pint. Sell 2000 pints a day plus food plus gaming machines and it's a nice profit.

Good challenge. I have just run through all my favourite bars and I think I know who owns them. I can certainly say this for Berlin and I’m pretty sure I can for Brighton as well. I’m a little bit sketchy on the Evening Star these days though.

I can also do this for all my favorite cafes and restaurants. If you take an interest in an establishment, and frequent it, you learn who owns it just from interest.

I haven't been in a Wetherspoons for years.

Maybe they have changed in that time but I couldn't stand the sticky floors and lack of music.

Lack of music is a big plus

I'll pop into the Spoons at Gatwick or maybe if I need a quick pint somewhere. Wouldn't got to one for a night out but they serve a purpose. Good range of beers at rock bottom prices.

On the downside, they're devoid of character and the owner seems to be a twat. Also, the food looks awful.

Unless,of course, you have tried every beer in every pub in the country.

Why?

Garish bright lights. Horrible carpet. The huge domestic violence hot line poster at the door to the George Street one. The customers leave a lot to be desired as well, one honked of piss last time I was in a non-airport bar.

I have used the Gatwick one for hang-over fry ups and the one at Terminal 5 actually had some nice beers which tasted okay. I’m of the view there’s way much better on offer outside of airports.

Only time I'll go to spoons is at Gatwick or away games via London.

Even before gigs these days I don't go to spoons, went to a gig in London last year and went to Underworld in Camden for pre gig beers.

Great atmosphere, was playing some cracking music including the band I was seeing at OVO Arena that night. Only downside was the price, about £15 for two pints.

I don’t think thats true Tom. Hipsters drink a different type of beer that Wetherspoons rarely stock. Maybe Punk or some crappy pale that no one can keep down. Doom bar and Abbots ? Jesus wept. Their beer is never in good nick and often stale as HT says. Saying that I’ve drank plenty in the one outside Victoria on the way to games.

This is a ridiculous accusation of Wetherspoons pubs. They sell vast amounts of beer, even of the more niche brands, so couldn't possibly meet their demand from short-date beer. It's fair to say that they probably have the freshest beer in the industry.

The food is mediocre but good value - Friday lunchtime with colleagues, chicken wrap, a few chips and a pint (PINT!) of Leffe for about £9.50 in Central London.

Tim Martin is a Brexity wanker.

Dunno. The Red Lion @ LGW always sold Punk IPA. There's rumours of a Brewdog outlet opening in the same terminal (was supposed to be opening at the back end of last year). I guess it depends if you want a far more expensive pint with far less chance of a fry up
