8 League Games

140 Shots

8 Goals

That is P*ss Poor

We need a goal getter and proper wingers. Not full backs pretending to be wingers

Do you have the stats for last season when we did play with proper wingers. I'd wager it isn't anywhere close in terms of numbers of shots per game and would suggest the problem isn't the lack of wingers, but the lack of chances being converted.

It's still early days hopefully they can click and start putting a much higher percentage of these chances away soon.

I don't, no. The Issue mainly lies with conversion and being exposed at the back though. Not interested in last season.

I am interested in now. We can't keep having Bennett, who seems to dance back to defend at his own pace and using Bruno as a make shift winger to attack.

We are going to be very exposed this season due to that along with having no edge up front.

It's not up for debate that, it's a fact.

Pleased with the fact that we shooting more, just not our awful conversion rate

Hyypia needs to learn quickly and also stop using players out of position. Lua Lua has been coming on and playing more central for example. That's NOT his strength.

And in previous seasons one of the main failings we had was a lack of players near our striker (s) and when the player out wide went to cross it, he'd be lucky to have a single Brighton player to aim at (and sometimes none) - Hyppia's system at least gives these forward players support and it must be doing something if we are havng a lot more shots.

It's still early days and hopefully it will get better (in terms of converting chances) and who knows, if we do the maybe we won't be throwing so much forward and be more solid at the back. (have we led this season or have they all been chasing when behind / drawing meaning we are more attacking?)

Most of the responses to this thread are bang on with their comments. Firstly it is great to see an Albion side with more attacking intent. 140 shots in 8 games sounds very respectable, but clearly the 'goals for' tally shows that we can't find the net that often. To be fair we have been up against some decent goalkeeping too.

The quality of our crosses is very average. This is compounded by not getting enough players into the box, too often there is one isolated Albion player among two or three defenders. Secondly we seem happy to launch high crosses when our front line only consists of hobbits. Thirdly too many attacking passes in the final third seem to be over hit or behind the attacker. That seems to reflect that our tactics and formations don't give us a consistent pattern and there seems to be a degree of uncertainty arising from players being out of their traditional positions. Either that or they get in each others way, which happened several times today.

I don't think it helps that Sami is now rotating the squad, so not always having our strongest or in form line up as first choice and playing together so that the system becomes intuitive. To my mind our strongest line up should be today's back four, with Holla and Ince in front of them, hopefully when fit Dale Stephens will offer more than Crofts or JFC. Then Teixeira, Baldock and CMS. KLL, Colunga, McCourt and COG etc on the bench.

If we ever get it right then someone will get a battering.

It might be p*ss poor, but that's far too simplistic.

We need to know the who/when/where breakdown of those shots.

It feels like over half are from set pieces, where you'd expect a shot to be generated.

Of the other say 60
(again it feels like) Bruno, Bennett and Kaz account for 50 of them from 18 to 25 yards out.
With the last few crumbs being spread around CMS Baldock and Colunga.

The horrendous miss in the first minute, yesterday, is the exception that proves the rule.
That is the type of chance our forwards need and are not getting.

The point is that it's great have improved a lot in the shooting stats. The conversion rate is awful though. People like Wayne Bridge had the quality to be a wing back. Joe Bennett doesn't. Same as Bruno. It's an area we need to spend money on

Forwards are too small we need a lump, 1 league goal in 8 games is piss poor from our strikers and not convinced it will improve they just don't look dangerous against towering defenders

This such a daft argument. Colunga didn't scuff his chance because he's short. Baldock didn't pass up a great chance to shoot because he's not tall. It's nonsense.

Is it great that we're shooting more.

Those stats can easily be equated to:-

Albion turned the ball over 100+ times while in the opposition half, while attacking their goal.

All a 'lump' does is provide a bigger target for the midfield to not pass too.

[in response to a claim we are creating more chances]
Are we? Or are we showing a lack of discipline and blasting shots from distance that do not, and were never going to, trouble the opposition? Just because we shot doesn't mean we created a chance.

One of those shots might be the (if this includes cup games) JFC taking a shot direct from kick off, gifting the opposition possession. If not, it certainly will have included what were reported to be wasteful shots from Lualua v Ipswich, shooting from distance rather than trying to create a decent chance.

It will also include Colunga softly cushioning the ball into the keeper's hands when one on one.

Last season people liked to make a big deal about how we were had a better shots per game stat under Oscar than the previous season under Gus. What they ignored was under Oscar we had a worse shots on target stat than under Gus. Under Oscar around 25% of shots were on target (13 shots per game, 3.5 on target) under Gus it was 50% (10 shots per game, 5 on target). I know which of those stats I prefer.

Taking lots of shots is not impressive, especially when 80% of them are off target (we had 25 shots yesterday, 5 on target).

We need to work towards better chances rather than more shots.

Which is why they need to play on the shoulder and get through balls. I saw the strikers consistently looking for a ball to run through on, and they did not come. About 15 corners, which as you say was meat and gravy for the big defenders, along with a number of crosses. When you have big defenders then the midfield needs to see more of the ball and look for the through ball, instead yesterday the ball went out wide and then into the box.

Could get on the end of one of the aimless crosses which sail over the others heads
I've not seen any massive bean storks growing at Lancing.
So we can fairly safely say that player isn't arriving anytime soon.

Begging the question:-

Why sail in aimless crosses, in the first place.

with 140 shots on goal.

We must have played against so many 'keepers on top form, singlehandedly saving points for their team.

Oh hang on, somethings not right here, because we haven't.
