This sounds like typical French policing. A combination is poor organisation and communication and probably doing their best to antogonise and make life as tricky as possible for visiting fans.

I just told the policeman I was a Brighton fan and was waved through.

Police have been asking to see our tickets (or, since the obvious route from the metro to the collection point is through the cordoned area, our confirmation emails). Bit bureaucratic but it means the square is pretty much exclusively Albion.
