It's funny how many of these opposition views are written by the mysterious Barry Pittaway. He's featured so much that he even made it into the 'Favourite Barry' poll on NSC in 2007...
He's a very influential man, most local journalists now have their own spin on his trademark Pittaway's Prediction.

The Grecians travel to moneybags Brighton and Hove Albion with everything set against them...

I had a quick check on the interweb for the confirmed/rumoured transfer fees exchanged over the summer, let's have a look. Bear in mind this is fees paid and not wages which obviously you can't tell. Where I've put (undisc) its where I've found a rumoured fee from a (semi)reputable site, and if I couldn't find one at all I've left it as (undisc) and put the overall spending estimate as >(greater than)...

Southampton £650,000
Frazer Richardson (Charlton) 400,000 (undisc)
Ryan Dickson (Brentford) 250,000 (undisc)

Huddersfield £500,000
Alan Lee (Crystal Palace) 500,000 (undisc)

Swindon £350,000
Simon Ferry & Paul Caddis (Celtic) 350,000 (combined, undisclosed)

Brentford >£350,000
Nicky Adams (Leicester) 150,000 (undisc)
Gary Alexander (Millwall) 100,000 (undisc)
Michael Spillane (Norwich) 50,000 (undisc)
Toumani Diagouraga (Peterboro) 50,000 (undisc)
Craig Woodman (Wycombe) (undisc)

Charlton £335,000
Paul Benson (Dagenham) 230,000 (undisc)
Simon Francis (Southend) 35,000
Pawel Abbott (Oldham) 20,000 (undisc)
Akpo Sodje (Sheff Wed) 50,000 (undisc)

Brighton >£300,000
Gordon Greer (Swindon) 300,000
Ashley Barnes (Plymouth) (undisc)

Peterborough >£200,000
Lee Tomlin (Rushden) 150,000 (undisc)
Kelvin Langmead (Shrewsbury) 50,000 (undisc)
James Wesolowski (Leicester) (undisc)

Bournemouth, Plymouth & Sheff Wed Nominal Fees

Bristol Rovers/Carlisle/Colchester/Dagenham & Redbridge/Exeter/Hartlepool/
Leyton Orient/MK Dons/Notts County/Oldham/Rochdale/Tranmere/
Walsall/Yeovil - No transfer fees paid out

So that puts us 6th highest in transfer fees paid. This wasn't an exact science but you'd assume wages-wise we're prices out of the market by probably Sheff Wed, Peterborough & Plymouth too - putting us roughly where Gus/Tony said, in the top 8 or 9 teams in the division budget-wise. But even BRENTFORD spent more than us. How every week it can be claimed we're Man City is beyond me, but its just a manager's easy fall-back excuse if we hammer them...they spent more than us. Boo its not fair.

Huddersfield also signed Scott Arfield for £400k. Plus they must be forking out an absolute packet (by L1 standards) on the wages of Gudjohnsson, Alan Lee, Garner and the like..

It does not tell you what you got in from sales either...

Our first team must have had £1million spent on it in total

All these things are true, but the quote every opposing manager seems to be trotting out about us being free-spending Brighton is their reflection to transfer fees paid, and they're talking recently. The money we've spent. Our wage bill will be miles below half a dozen teams in the division - I can't imagine any of our players other than Ankergren, Greer, Calderon, Sparrow and maybe Kishishev on any more than £3k a week. Brezovan, Painter, Murray, Bennett, Dicker - all signed last year on probably about £1k-£2k p/w. Bridcutt, Baz, Battipiedi, Sandaza, are all on short-term contracts, at a guess low wage but with appearance/win bonuses structured in so that they can make a decent wage if they make a decent contribution.

I think the key point we all need to focus on is that at least 2 of these opposing manager quotes have been cunningly crafted jokes by NSC members.
