McAllister: These lads can do it for Leeds United

By Bill Hay
GARY McAllister has delivered a vote of confidence to his Leeds United squad after allowing the emergency loan deadline to pass without any new arrivals at Elland Road.
McAllister, who made an unsuccessful approach for one unnamed player before the Football League's temporary market closed at 5pm last night, has faith in the ability of his players to tie up a play-off position.

Leeds made just two signings during the loan window – Dougie Freedman from Crystal Palace and striking an ill-fated deal with Aston Villa for defender Stephen O'Halloran – and McAllister will rely on familiar faces for the final eight league games.

United host play-off rivals Brighton tomorrow and McAllister said: "I'm happy with the 19-man squad. It's been very tight during the last four or five weeks.

"We've got enough cover, and certainly enough quality. I'm backing my players. We've got the strength in depth, and a nice mixture of the young and the experienced."

McAllister's side beat Walsall convincingly at Elland Road six days ago but he predicted a tight battle with a Brighton team who held Nottingham Forest to a goalless draw on Monday.

"I saw them at Forest and they competed very well," said McAllister.

"They're on a decent run, and they'll be pretty confident. But our players have set standards, and after Walsall they should have a good feeling about themselves."

Bills Verdict

Leeds recorded a resounding victory over play-off rivals Walsall last week and I back them to do the same this week in what looks an entertaining contest over an in-form Brighton side. The two clubs may be both tussling for a play-off spot but United are in a different league as the gap without the 15 point deduction would destify and I back them for a resounding 3-0 home victory.

McAllister: These lads had better do it for Leeds United

By Bill Hay
GARY McAllister has delivered a plaintative plea his stumbling Leeds United squad after the emergency loan deadline passed without any interest from anybody in playing at Elland Road.
McAllister, who made an unsuccessful approach to one unnamed player in a public toilet in Farsley, before the Football League's temporary market closed at 5pm last night, has prayed to the good lord for the faith in the ability of his players to tie up a play-off position although, back in the real world, the balding Scot with the hangdog eyes can probably already hear the scratch of Ken Bates quill on his P45.

Pisspoor Leeds made just two signings during the loan window – Dougie "Bottler" Freedman from Chrystal Palace and the mother of all dropped bollocks, deal with Aston Villa for defender Stephen O'Halloran – so McAllister will have to rely on familiar slack jawed faces for the final eight league games.

United host play-off rivals Brighton tomorrow and McAllister said: "I ish that I could field a the 19-man squad against their 11, but och aye the boards been very tight with the money they robbed during the last four or five weeks".

"We've covered our financial tracks well, and this has meant we can buy players way above the standard for this league, albeit illegally. I'm backing my players. We've got the strength in depth, and a nice mixture of the young the experienced and the psychotic."

McAllister's side beat Walsall convincingly at Elland Road six days ago but he predicted a tight battle with a Brighton team who held Nottingham Forest to a goalless draw on Monday.

"I saw them at Forest and they bossed the game very well," said McAllister.

"They're on a decent run, and they'll be pretty confident. But our players have set consistently low standards, and after Walsall they should be feeling themselves."

Bills Verdict

15 points blah blah, deductions, blah blah, true position, blah blah..

What he really meant.

Very good - perhaps Dean should pin the 'spoof' article to the away dressing room wall tomorrow?

This is the most surprising bit of the real article. Happy enough with a 19 man squad to allow Westy to stay on the coast ???
