They did it at the city of manchester stadium aswell. i think its got something to do with the size of the place and the fact that they couldnt fit a football pitch in with that amount of seats or something.

But surely a football pitch is smaller than an athletics track (ours fits comfortably inside one, for example)???

they upgraded the CoM in terms of seats didn't they? they took out the track cos man city didn't want one.

with regards to the olympic stadium, there is nothing concrete to do with a football team playing there

The legacy plans in the London 2012 bid is to have the stadium converted into a 25,000 seat athletics stadium with a sports training, science and medicine centre following the 2012 Paralympics.

However some football teams wish to move into the Olympic stadium after the games. If a football team does move into the stadium, the capacity of the stadium would decrease to around 45,000 - 70,000 or stay at its Olympic form of 80,000. However even if a football club does move to the Olympic Stadium, the LOCOG wishes to also hold athletic events at the stadium, as they wish for an athletic legacy for the stadium.

It has been suggested that West Ham United wishes to be the tenant after the games. This proposal was advanced further following West Ham's takeover by the Icelandic consortium, with new Chairman Eggert Magnusson announcing in November 2006 that he would begin discussions with London 2012 and the government about the club eventually moving.

There has also been speculation that Chelsea F.C. might move there, due to lack of room for expansion at their current stadium. However, due to the terms of the Chelsea Pitch Owners, the club would have to relinquish the name 'Chelsea Football Club' should they ever move from Stamford Bridge.

If a football team is denied the stadium, then the 25,000 capacity will go forward as planned.

I thought they added seats at the City of Manchester Stadium to bring them closer to the pitch after the running track was removed?

Think they took stands away from each end of the Olympic stadium in Sydney after the games.

They did. They excavated the middle 6m further down [ie the current pitch is much lower than the track was, and there are 30 rows of extra seats.

that still holds 80,000+ though

why are we downgrading ours to a MEASLEY 25,000?

Because Sydney needed a big stadium. London doesn't, as it already has at least 4.

It's interesting that Espanyol, who play in the Barcelona Olympic Stadium, are currently building a brand new place of their own.

the barcelona olympic stadium is VERY old though isn't it?

built for the "peoples games" before the war

building a new ground may be cheaper than renovation?

I thought the Barcelona stadium was pretty much rebuilt completely for the Olympic Games. Mainly because of its superb location.

ah ok, fair enough

how much is the new ground going to hold?

Lets say discussions are still being held with a football club concerning the Olympic Stadium.

Issues include whether to sell the property,

or preferbly the leasehold, if a leasehold the length of leasehold.

Man City have about a 250 year leasehold, the rent they pay is very cheap - way below the market rate.

West Ham were hoping to get a similar deal - but that is not happening.

Without a football club in the Olympic Stadium, there is no need for another stadium of more than 20,000 in LOndon.

If a football club takes the Olympic Stadium, the warm up athletic stadium which also holds 20,000 will be converted to the main athletics stadium after the games.

It is important to sort out the stadium final post Olympic Function and therefore design before it is built.

The Man City ground was upgraded up by another 15,000 spectators and sight lines etc have had to be compromised, and the upgrading costs were nearly as much as building the original stadium.

The Olympic Federation are fully aware of these issues, again, they do not want another white elephant, like Athens - no usage, Rome which is now being restructured to enable its first usage as a main stadium for 40 years.

Espanyol Olympic Stadium holds 72,000. It hardly gets more than 20,000. In addition, there are strong covenants on the stadium, restricting its usage and new design. It is a costly stadium to maintain and operate.

90,000 down to 25,000?

can't really see a reason for doing this?

The other 65,000 will be needed as temporary stands at Withdean.
