I particularly remember in in the early 70’s when my older brother treated me to a seat up top..
I’d never noticed up till then. I’m presuming the north stand would have been worse surely ? ( That’s where I belonged)
It didn’t sit kind with me as a gobby kid though,

Yep, sadly I remember this as a small kid up there. I joined in the first time I heard it. My dad was quick to put me right. I remember that as well in the North stand. I'm pretty sure we had black players in our team as well, but off course it wasn't directed at them.

Also I distinctly recall a racist “joke” about Garth Crooks being told over the PA at half time, presumably by Tony Millard? I can’t remember the fixture, or the year, but I think I was quite shocked at the time, and looking back it feels both shameful and surreal - it’s not like jokes were a common feature of half time announcements.

Some things have changed for the better in football and society as a whole, but we can’t be complacent about it.

Mind you, Bristol City weren't averse to foopahs. I was at an Albion match there in '95 when they started playing Smokie's 'Alice'. Alas, they put the explicit version on. We found it rather funny to see it ringing out across the family section.

At 10 years old I never went to The Goldstone with a “responsible adult” I just went with mates from school and we looked up to “bigger boys”

I did monkey noises, joined in with racist chants and even made nazi salutes.

Sadly, you can’t turn back time.

At 55 years old I now go to away matches with my 14 year old son who cringes and gets a bit embarrassed for those his own age singing the Wilfred Zaha dies song and other hateful shite.

I’m proud of his train of thought which is basically his own free thinking.

I’m not back peddling here, but we (the mates from school) all did it. Thing is, from my perspective anyway, there was no hate involved, I just thought it was normal behaviour to give stick to the opposition in this fashion. If the word existed It would have just been called “bantz”
Fortunately I grew up quite quickly and realised how stupid I’d been and avoided that type of crowd. I’m very remorseful but like I said, sadly you can’t turn back time or erase the past.

I was quite young at the time and all these years later, because it was so surreal, embarrassing and out of character for a PA announcement, I have sometimes wondered if I imagined it …..even though I remember it so clearly.
