Goalless St Albans
By Paul Camillin, at Clarence Park
Albion's pre-season build up continued this evening with a goalless draw at St Albans.
Mark McGhee was satisfied with his side's display, but added, "I would have liked to have seen some goals. In the first half in particular we put some good balls into feet and didn't make anything of it, so that could have been better, but you have to remember that it's on the back a very physical day yesterday and training today."
McGhee maintained the same policy he used in the friendly against Worthing on Wednesday: ringing the changes at half-time.
Kerry Mayo was the only outfield player who appeared in both halves, although goalkeeper Richard Martin also played the full 90 minutes.
Charlie Oatway played the first 45 minutes
Albion dominated possession throughout the match, but couldn't convert a string of chances in to goals. Paul Reid, Leon Knight and Chris McPhee all went close for Albion, while Mayo tried his luck from distance a couple of speculative drives, but ultimately failed to trouble home keeper Paul Bastock.
Knight and Chris McPhee linked up well in the first half; while Colin Kazim-Richards again impressed after the break. Another plus for McGhee was the return to action of Guy Butters - who came on as a second-half substitute - after he missed much of this week following a knock on the knee in last week's match against Le Havre.
The clash with Conference South side St Albans was the first of two fixtures Albion face this weekend - McGhee's men will be in action again this Sunday at Lewes - but first they have another day's training at Falmer on Saturday.
McGhee said, "It'll be exactly the same [at Lewes] as tonight. We'll play two teams. It only be next Saturday at Colchester, and at Oxford and Bournemouth that we will start to play people for 90 minutes."
Meanwhile McGhee also revealed Adam Virgo will resume training next week, and that he is making progress on bringing in more new faces, saying, "We still hope to bring in a couple but there is nothing I can say at the moment."
Albion (first half): Sullivan, Dodd, Elphick, El-Abd, Lynch, Mayo, Reid, Oatway, Hammond, Knight, McPhee.
Albion (second half): Sullivan, May, El-Abd, Butters, Mayo, Hart, Carpenter, Nicolas, Jarrett, Kazim-Richards, McCammon.
