As something of a cycling JCl I'm almost a bit dubious about asking this in case its blasphemy of some kind, but:

Why do they have to spend so long behind this bike? Surely one or two laps would be sufficient?

It takes time to pick up momentum and pace

Just watched the replay. Mears is in trouble, Pendleton just followed her without putting in any real effort and rode over her the moment she wanted to. Guo Shuang looks the only real challenger for gold, though Krupeckaite looked strong despite getting completely boxed in. My prediction:

1. Pendleton
2. Shuang
3. Krupeckaite

Really? She looked like she had her in her pocket to me. The aussies are not going to win any golds on the track this year.

Mears was easing up so it was hard to judge exactly what she had left sprint wise. Over the last few years it just seemed Mears had a bit more in the legs but we will see and I really hope I am wrong. Pendleton does look very focused which is a great sign

These heats do not seem very equal. Pendleton, Kanis and Mears in one, Krupeckaite and Shuang in the next. The first heat, just Vogel and some russian?

If they follow japanese Keiran rules, they normally pick a bit like countdown by drawing cards. We have seen loads where one side of the draw has all the big names.

I thought Vicky looked excellent, she is all or nothing in this event just wants to win.

Much better from the Australians that time. Looked properly organised that time unlike yesterday's rather disjointed effort. Denmark v NZ for the bronze should be a cracker too, if it comes to that.

can someone please explain to me why they "shed" one team member in the final few laps? thanks

Because the clock stops when the THIRD rider crosses the line, so one guy takes more of the strain, up until the last couple of laps, to keep the others a tiny bit fresher, then pulls out and unleashes the other three.
