They need to stop pissing about with one day specialists and play the test team in one dayers. FACT.

Hear hear. How long have we been trundling out the likes of Vikram Solanki, Kabir Ali and Paul Collingwood.

To be fair to Collingwood he has become a very important player in tests. His fielding is second to none in England and his batting is improving all the time. His test average is 37.00 which isn't too shabby at all and his style compliments the likes of Pieterson and Flintoff very well.

I've always liked Solanki but he's never had a chance to show what he can do as he gets dropped after a couple of matches on the trot.

Without Vaughan the side should look like this..

Banger
Strauss
Cook
Bell
Pieterson
Collingwood
Flintoff
Jones (but preferably Read)
Hoggy
Harmison
Panesar

Collingwood is now a genuine all rounder and should be bowling ten overs in very game and if need be Pieterson can chip on with 4 or 5.

Agree, other than Hoggard and Panesar. Hoggard hasn't been a great one-day performer at international level, and Panesar has only played 8 one-day games and taken 6 wickets.

I can't see any other one day bowler to use and just because Panesar hasn't taken many wickets doesn't not mean he won't.

I wouldn't want Hoggy particularly, Jones would play if fit. I'd also want to play Kirtley but we know he's never going to get back near the England set up.

This one-day series has shown how costly poor fast bowling is.
I think not playing Panesar at any point seems a strange decision

I wouldn't rule Panesar out of the one-day set up completely, but I'd rather he had a bit more experience of it on a domestic level before throwing him in at the deep end.

It's a shame Kirtley never got more of a chance at test match level, as I didn't think he did too badly in the few games he played.

Slight comeback. 221/6 off 38.

I would play Monty. It seems that some people are given a chance and some others are not, for no apparent reason.

How many caps are they going to give someone like Solanki when is is blantantly not worthy of a place in the team.

The Cricinfo text commentary on the last over says it all really...

"The last four overs produced 50 runs to take the game out of reach unless England make a comeback of Lazarus-like proportions. The bowling was poor, and Sri Lanka batted with style and experience.

It’s lunch now – although England’s bowlers should be given bread and water and sent down to the nets – and we will be back for the second half of the match at about 3.10pm (14.10GMT). We apologise for the loss of commentary for a few overs during the Sri Lanka innings but it was down to our recently-fired ISP.
49.6 Ali to Maharoof, no run, a dot ball to end an over which produced 20 runs.
49.5 Ali to Bandara, 1 run, another full toss, hit square. It should have been called as it was above waist height but the umpire clearly wants to get off before sunset
49.4 Ali to Bandara, FOUR, the good news is that it actually pitched. The bad news is that it was short and pulled square for another four
49.4 Ali to Maharoof, (no ball) 1 run, guess … go on. Yes, a full toss which Maharoof skies and Jones runs round to take a catch .. but rightly called a no-ball
49.3 Ali to Maharoof, SIX, Ali overcompensates with a short slower ball which is thwacked into the crowd at midwicket.
49.2 Ali to Maharoof, SIX, yet another full toss and it got all it deserved, hammered for six over square leg. Maharoof brings up his fifty and his side’s 300. Ali is dreadful.
49.1 Ali to Bandara, 1 run, another full toss, but only a single this time"

Thats 4 games where the bowling has been rubbish - can't believes how many extras we keep giving them. You might as well hand them a few extra overs and a headstart of 30 runs. Harmison and dalrymple seem to have done okay but even they have gifted wides.
I think the batting has been okay but whats the point when the bowlers are giving sri lanka over 6 runs an over, by not bowling to the field set by strauss.
I'm getting worried now by being embarrassed by englands performance in the cricket world cup - maybe we should bring back caddick and gough!!!

its Ok Kabir Ali will be given many more chances to come good. As for Liam Plunkett he is sooooo much better than Kirtley. Isn't he? :jester:

Was saying to a mate this morning that this ODI side is possibly the worst since the days when we were picking the likes of Irani, Craig White and Ricki Clarke. Shocking.

Kabir Ali has had enough games, he just can't cut it. I hate to admit it but for the world cup they simply have to go back to Gough.

The make up of the side looks unbalanced without freddie in there and take out KP and Collingwood and the batting is too reliant on Tres.

Simply not good enough. I don't think playing the test players is the answer though. Ian Bell batted quite well the other day but often enough his classical shots showed no adjustment. One shot he square cutted it technically very well, rolled his wrist but it went straight to backward point. Jayasuriya on the other hand or Gilchrist would have hit it in the air over point, maybe not technically so correct but more effective in ODI's.

Panesar is definitely not the answer - even more in a one dayer you can't hide a fielder and he needs hiding !!
