Civil servants, you say? Are you suggesting that they don't share all their calculations with The Opposition well in advance of the government announcements? Isn't that a bit unfair? How can anyone expect the opposition to instantly come up with a detailed alternative that rebuts every one of the government's announcements, point by point, with no prep time?

Or maybe people to expect labour to hire thousands of independent equivalents of civil servants, and buy access to all the data available to the government, so they can keep an 'alternative' budget that will second guess every one of the government's announcements, constantly simmering on the pot?

I have seen some cockamamie attempts to pillory labour over the years, but presenting a budget rebuttal that lacks the granularity of the new budget itself is absurd. Pointing out that the tories have done 180 degree turn on their original autumn plan, and that instead of heading for sunny uplands we are on a highway to hell is good enough for me.

We will see what labour are made of when they take over in a couple of years.

Labour will be fvcked - they’re going to inherit an impossible shitshow.

What did you expect. Mrs Bodian asked last week what I thought might happen, I said "goodies now, take more away from us after they lose power in a few years, and some hidden benefits for their mates in the small print". Doesn't sound as though I was too far out!

well that wasnt in the speech. a "planned" increase, is it reversal of a cut?
Edit: its from the OBR forecast, under risks and uncertainties (of the forecast).

Kicking the can is exactly it, it's like they know they're doomed to fail, then when things don't get better over night they'll blame it all on the opposition and us as a nation. Teflon ****s the lot of them.

The state pension increasing by £820 next April will give you £68 a month more income, but £14 of that will go in tax.

Hopefully the £4,585 company pension has some sort of index linking too?

Thank you for working that out, it’s roughly what I thought. Yes the company pension does have a small amount of index linking. (My reward for working for M&S for 25 years).

Given that anyone earning over £50,000 in a household receiving Child Benefit will have to repay part of that benefit back via Self-Assessment there will be a lot more than just tax coming back to the Exchequer.

By my calculations, if you receive a salary increase of £1,000 a year and are uplifted from £50K to £51K then by the time you've deducted 40% tax, 2% NI, 5% Auto-Enrolment Pension deduction, £180 for Higher Income Child Benefit Charge and £300 for an accountant to prepare your Tax Return you might be left with £50 in your pocket.

Will this “planned increase” have been factored into whether the autumn statement’s, maths actually add up in the OBR forecast? So if the government did not raise fuel duty, the calculations made by the government would not be viable?
I’m not Tory bashing I’m just trying to work out why the OBR have factored this increase in, what would have made them think to factor the “increase” in and what would this do to the forecast by the OBR if the money raised from this increase is not available, if the government does not implement an increase?

I’m becoming increasingly confused.
First time here are hidden/unmentioned increases.
Then it appears that the 10% hike in windfall tax on energy firms is 10% on the ZERO tax they currently pay.
Then it seems that sustainable energy suppliers will pay a larger percentage windfall tax than fossil fuel but that they actually DO pay their tax!

Are we being totally gaslighted!?
