Rose and Stenson win 5&4 against Watson and Simpson, who were 2 over betterball. Simpson looked really poor.

Bjorn and Kaymer 2 up, Poulter and Gallacher 6 down, McIlroy and Garcia back to 1 down.

Will be 1-1 imminently. The McIlroy / Mickelson match is so important, if Europe could win that then what a boost that would be, firing up the crowd for the afternoon's play.

I'm failing miserably.

The Ryder Cup is a superb sporting occasion. Europe going well at the moment.

Poulter & Gallacher lose 5&4. Both played very poorly, although the young yanks played very well together.

Bjorn and Kaymer 2 up playing the 16th. McIlroy and Garcia now all square after 13.

Nobody so far has been playing really well.

Personally, I would have played Kaymer with McIlroy this afternoon, but we will see what happens. Very surprised the 2 young yanks are not playing.

Massive 18th hole now for Rory and Sergio, got themselves out of jail there on the 17th after 2 poor tee shots. Would take 2-2 after the four balls.

Big point for the Yanks 2 1/2 - 1 1/2. Europe's No. 1 McIlroy, talisman Poulter, local boy Gallacher all lost. Tom Watson will be well happy with that.

Rory & Sergio completely balls up 18 and lose. So USA 2.5 to 1.5 in the lead when Europe should be 2.5, 1.5 ahead at the very least. Pathetic effort from the world number 1 and 3. They seriously need to pull their fingers out this afternoon.

Poulter didn't make a single birdie all morning. That's not what the captain was looking for leading out a rookie.

Horrific from Europe so far barring Rose and Stenson. I am fearing a bloodbath, will do well to be less than 2 points behind at the end of day 1.

Much better standard this afternoon so far (other than Garcia who is spraying it over the shop at the moment). Still early days though
