how many riders will crash, before they stop the tour?

I'm smashed and I've been watching Eurosport most of the afternoon, only turning over as Nibs crossed the line.I'm going to have a shot every time they mention an American rider for no apparent reason.

Exactly how far did Bert ride with this minor ailment?

What was Riis up to? While the doctor was bandaging Contador's knee he whipped the rain jacket out of Contador's back pocket, hid it behind his back and then slipped it in his pocket. Or so it looked on the highlights.
Can't see Contador making the Vuelta with a broken leg...
Visconti made this Tour from a broken Fibia in the Giro I think. Not sure of the relative time scales without working it out and what;s the difference in recovery time between broken fibula and tibia.
Edit: My mistake. Just remembered it was the Tour Down Under where he broke it, not the Giro. Just checked the time scales...Broke it in January, was back to proper racing in April.

Yeah, only 6 weeks to the Vuelta so no chance.
Tibia is a much bigger deal then fibula, you can function perfectly well without most of the latter.
Thanks. Doesn't look good for him making it does it. I think we all instantly rushed to conclude he'd be there and make it a dream GC startlist.
This is an interesting reader comment on the CN story:
If it's a stress fracture on your tibia it may feel like a strain on your knee. Happened to my bro, fortunately he got x-rays after walking around on it for weeks thinking it was tendonitis! Still really, really hurt. I'm guessing Alberto's was also a fracture on the lower tibia given his crash
Still takes nothing away from the fact that pro cyclists are just mental in terms of their willingness to try and get back on the bike. Which reminds me...chapeau to Machado today for getting back on and finishing the stage
Yes, there are a whole host of possible injuries.
The very mechanism of Contador's injury means it isn't a stress fracture (from repeated use). Most likely a fracture at the top end (tibial plateau) which can result from excessive twisting forces as well as impact. Some of these require surgery as, I think, they've said contador is having. Any fracture lower down, he wouldn't be able to weight bear at all and anything needing surgery would have quite an obvious deformity.
