anyone know much about corn on the cob things? How long until the corns turn up? Mine are f***ing massive now. Repotted them a couple of weeks ago. Now they are pushing at the roof of the greenhouse without a cob in sight yet. I am a bit frightened of them now to be honest.

All I know is they are really cooked as soon as you pick them.

Corn deteriorates very quickly and isn't worth cooking after a day or so, which is why they usually vacuum pack it in the supermarkets.

I've found out to my cost that slugs LOVE basil, but I've had great success growing thai basil.

With the coriander I've grown (which will soon be pulled up for it's tasty roots), I'll be making a lot of thai green curry paste for the freezer.

Next year I'm going to have a bash at Kiwi fruit and blueberries.

My Current Herb List

Genovese Basil - Cheaper than buying it, but I found a bit of a bugger to grow (*)
Lime Basil (looks nice, rubbish flavour)
Greek Basil - like Italian but milder
Cinnamon Basil - bit like Thai Basil, but it's flavour isn't up to much. Planted it to flower which is does quite magnificantly.
Thai Basil - superb stuff, grown from seed my biggest success.

Oregano - 2 types, not sure what they are.
Sage - problematic, but coming on well.
Chives
Thyme
French Parsley
English Parsley
Flat Leaf Parsley

Lemon Coriander - tastes like normal coriander to me, but still very nice

Mint - probably the easiest herb to grow and doesn't stop growing - two types.

Rosemary - again very easy

Veg

Planted a variety of chillies, but lost track of what they are. Had trouble germinating but worked it out in the end.

Tomatoes - just flowering, but a number of different types 26 plants in total ! Some I grew from a tomatoes bought in the supermarket.

Sugar Snap Peas - very nice, but a very small crop. One of the plants died on me yesterday.

Cucumbers - disaster !. Have one plant left, everything else died. Does appear to be coming along though.

Globe Artichoke - bit random this one. I think it's ok, but it's a very odd plant.

This is the first year I have grown anything, and not only is it great fun - it's also easy.

Most of my stuff is in pots by the way, although I've got some chillies going in a big raised bed.

(*) From a professional gardener, I found the trick with basil is only to water in the morning NEVER at night. He was right, it makes a massive difference.

I suspect this may go down in NSC legend as one of the dullest first posts but here goes.....

I swear by Nemaslug for slug killing. You mix the nematodes in water and they eat the the slugs. Not the cheapest method but really works if you do it every six weeks once your soil has heated up. Added to this if you get some copper tape for your pots and put it around the rim that'll keep them away as well.

Am growing apples, and black grapes in our garden.

The vines grow over a couple of pergolas but the grape yield is really good as they bloody love the chalky soil, or terroir, as I believe it may be known..

Does anyone know if Middle Farm do grape pressing, because at the moment the whole lot gets thown on the compost heap, which seems a waste.

I also had my first bash at growing stuff this year and must admit ive found it to be alot easier than i thought and rewarding actually eating your own produce.

Had a lovely Caulifower cheese yday with some roast lamb (shop bought cauliflower) but with the addition of some Courgettes i had grown and it worked a treat - Courgettes a piece of piss to grow.

Chillis just starting actually look like chillis, Toms not there yet, Chantenay carrots were great as have been strawberries.

Basil, Rosemary and mint have been welcome additions and peas coming along.

Been lucky not having an insect/fox problem some may have as 5th floor terrace - will def do it again next year

I've had massive insect problems, but up to now have got by with organic sprays etc..

Whitefly are the worst, my chillies are still suffering from odd shaped leaves.

I assume that's what does it.

Update: Both plum trees have gone loopy this year. Already made a stash of plum jam. I fear the rest of the summer may be awash with plum crumble / plum sauces / plum liqueurs.

The apple trees - cooking and eating - are doing just great too. I fear the rest of the summer may be awash with apple crumble / apple sauces / apple liqueurs.

How's everyone else doing this summer?
