There are some crap old places in the north: Middlesbrough (well, all of Teesside), Hull, Sunderland, Grimsby, much of Liverpool, Blackpool...

...but then again you could say the same for the south: Dartford, Gillingham, most of the Medway towns and much of north Kent in fact, Dover, Croydon, Portsmouth, Slough. Some would say Hastings.

I love going to games in the north. There are some stunning old Victorian town/city centres around. Oddly, the biggest surprise of last season was Rochdale's MAJESTIC town hall. I'm not saying its a lovely town, but there are some splendidly grand old buildings in many northern places of the type you just don't get down here. Proper reet.

Agree. Gillingham is one of the most run down towns ive ever had the displeasure to visit. Cheshire contains some of the wealthiest parts of the country.

I doubles up as an AMAZING indoor sporting arena.

One of the reasons why the north has had so much regeneration is the amount of European money that has been on offer to rejuvenate th place. Even 20 years ago Hull City Council were spending £40K per council house to bring them up to a decent standard. Simillar amounts have been spent on town centre projects.

Having spent 20 years living in Barnsley I can safely say that the average working class person doesn't have half as much ambition or get up and go as the average southerner; but that's just my opinion

Crap Town
Do any houses in the north have inside toliets? :moo:

My house has 3 toilets. I heard a rumour recently that Grimsby is going to be twinned with Croydon.

When we're talking about "The North", you mean somewhere up near Hassocks, yes ? I thought if you went any further than that you just sort of fell off the earth. Those Hassocks northerners are a bit wierd though.

The latest map showing the north - south divide has Grimsby on the verge of being counted as a Southern town.

at home
Although born in Huddersfield, I only lived there till 6 and then moved to Wakefield for a couple of years. I have also lived in Kent, Wiltshire and Sussex and certainly Sussex is my favourite place to live. Wiltshire was a very strange place...melksham was were we lived and although lived in a four bed detached house, mum told me it was very cheap compared to when we moved to patcham.

I certainly look upon hudds as my home town, and there are some really lovely areas around there...holmfirth, where the filmed last of the summer wine , my mum was born there is really pretty as is some of the villages around there. Having said that unless circumstances dramatically change, I can't ever seeing myself moving back( to be fair I left 47 years ago) and all the relatives we kept in contact with are no longer around so I don't even visit anymore.

I absolutely love living down here and have met some really good friends as well as a fabulous wife from brighton, being married 30 years. I do think " southrners" area bit more standoffish that northerners" but that is probably a generalisation.
