I don't know, but used to be in the cock-up camp, i.e as RdZ indicated, the standard of reffing in the PL is not good enough. Now, however I am starting to suspect conspiracy. It is almost as though refs are going out of their way to make perverse decisions which go against us.
Fortunately, this was one that didn't actually effect the end result, but already this season we have been on the end of appalling decisions which could ultimately cost as European football.

The bad decision that I thought would get us was when Mitoma was penalised just outside our penalty area for a shoulder to shoulder challenge

I'd really love to see the referee watch a replay of that incident, and then justify exactly why he didn't deem it worthy of a 2nd yellow. Please - just explain.

I assume he has an assessor somewhere in the stands marking his performance. Surely they review key incidents like this at some point after the game. Can we at least see the minutes ?

Even if there was cover, that’s a stonewall yellow.

The ref and VAR officiated the occasion, not purely the game in front of them. “Oh, I don’t want to be put in a position of having to reduce one team to 10 men”.

Did Haha give away about 8 freekicks with fouls. I could’ve sworn blind that commentary teams always say “That’s a yellow under the clocking up procedure”.

But no gloom here. 3 POINTS AGAINST THE SCUM

This was my thought, too. I think the not giving Caicedo the yellow for that challenge played into the not giving Doucoure the second yellow.

I don't know if that counts as defending the ref, but I think it's the best explanation we're going to get.

He didn't even speak to him for the second or third yellow card offences

As I'm sure others have pointed out it was the same Peter Bankes who was the VAR official that inexplicably ruled out the Pervis goal for offside. It really makes you wonder if there's something else going on.
