The noise that cashpoints make isn't fake as the majority of responses to that article make clear. That webpage reminds me of the TV show QI which deliberately peddles lies to make people go "wow that's amazing".

The click of digital compacts and mobile phones was introduced - early models didn't have it - for legal reasons as Japanese men were using them to take photos up schoolgirls skirts on the Tokyo underground and the camera makers were worried about being sued (the click is supposed to act as a warning).

That's for Americans. Two reasons, firstly they wouldn't understand any subtle humour, so don't know when to laugh, and secondly, for most US Sitcoms, if it wasn't for canned laughter, there'd be no laughter at all.
