It wasn't during a tournament. It was November 2014 - Four months after the Brazil World Cup finished. Stupid mistake for a politician to make, but whether a St George's Cross draped over the house next to a white van, or a Union Flag on a white pole next to a perfectly manicured suburban lawn, or a flag from whichever country is currently being persecuted hung over the curtain pole in a city flat window, I must admit to finding the desire to hang flags at all a bit 19th century. I reckon it would be a better world if flags were only for questions on Pointless and Only Connect.

England have more often seemed to favour all white, or white and blue, not white and red. I guess this is either because of the dominant partner's assumption that the Union Flag colours belong to England, or because white and blue is easier to sell. However you could argue that the colours are generally inspired by the flag(s). To move away from arguments about nationalism and towards the much more fun trivia, let's ask the old chestnut about which teams don't play in the colours of their nation's flag and why?

If you can't be bothered to think about it, here's a link to spoilers: https://pyroonthepitch.com/2018/05/06/politics-on-the-pitch-2-the-non-flag-kit-colours-of-europe/
The Dutch, obviously (but for reasons back to the House of Orange, blah, blah).

No blue on the Italian flag.

No white on the Germany flag.

No blue on the Japan flag

No green on the Northern Ireland flag (lots of scope for arguments on this one!)

But they’ve changed the cross lads. Our grandads didn’t die for Nike to change the colour of the flag of Saint George. They’d be turning in their graves 😡. Pc gone mad.

Good stuff. The link concentrates on European sides and it's interesting to note that some football teams actually pre-date the proper formation of states. The Japan one seems to be a bit of a mystery with a number of different explanations offered up. I was interested to read that the old claim that Germany's away kit is inspired by Ireland seems to be incorrect.

I promised myself not to do it, but I did, I weakened and popped into this thread for kicks and giggles....all very predictable..... the left all shouting derision and scorn at the "flag-shaggers" ... I filled my bingo card very quickly.....

I simply ask, would any other national team, anywhere, be accepting of change of the flag of the nation as it exists and has existed for centuries, as a representation of the nation, on any emblematic uniform or sporting kit?
Yes.

They should of left it alone.

struggling to be really bothered other than to say i dont think in any way its a representation of the red on white st georges cross- which as we know is a red cross, anything that isnt red and vaguley cross shapped isnt a representation-its a different thing altogether. If the FA want to put something different on the shirt fine, but it aint a st georges cross unless its red and crossy-this new thing isnt red

As a member of the LGBTQI....... community that is part of the areas they want to be included-i think its meaningless. Stick a red cross on the shirt and if you want to makes feel wanted in football just do something about the racism, homophobia, and mysogeny instead, but that would take effort

Yes, agree. This is just a stupid token. If they really care, they would be putting the profits of this shirt to the causes that help or they would be using it to invest in schemes.

Has anyone thought this might be a marketing ploy by FA/Nike to create a major debate/discussion then announce they’ve listened to the people and change the flag in order to sell even more shirts?

This same thing comes up with EVERY SINGLE England kit launch. Every. Single. Time.

The headline price of £120+ is for the player-spec shirt, that literally NOBODY buys.

The actual replica shirts, that everyone will buy from Sports Direct will be about £65 - like every other football shirt.

If only … the ‘normal’ replica shirt is £84.99 for adults and £64.99 for kids.

Edit: just seen this has been covered off 👍

You're being a mug, here. This is a made up narrative. Like 'cake' is a made-up drug.

The 'cross' is simply Nike dicking about and the FA aftertiming about approving it (when my guess is that the bloke who was supposed to check it was watching the racing on channel 4).

I'm worried that you are prematurely turning into red-faced gammon. You're far too young for that. Get a grip!

:lolol:

Never will I be a gammon, but I can get annoyed at changing our flag’s colours. V poor.

If they REALLY changed it in line with 1966 then I HOLD MY HANDS UP.

Brighton factually.....
Our cousins across the north sea, are not too happy with their second kit

The fact that even people watch soccer in a soccer World or European Cup, who do not otherwise, is usually because a national soccer team represents and represents the entire nation. We stand unitedly behind her.
The German DFB-team, on the other hand, has been trying for years to represent only a small part of the Germans and defeat another part. Like by not wanting to be called a national team anymore. Or where they penetrate the spectators (through inscriptions on the team bus, armbands or embarrassing group photos) with ideological messages, instead of putting the sport in the focus.
And now they seriously want to wear a pink jersey at away games. Apparently, it was predicted that many people won't like it. The comments of the irritated public were anticipated and incorporated into an extra shot video. Tenor: The jersey is great, and whoever doesn’t like it has no idea.
The DFB team doesn't want to connect anymore. They now represent a small, morally superior part of society and ideologically do their thing. Whoever doesn't like this is narrow-minded or eternal and has just had bad luck. This appearance does not work well with the Greens, it does not work with our media and it will not work for the DFB team either.
When you stop being complicit, there’s no longer a rational reason to watch a couple millionaires you don’t personally know play ball.

Yes. In happened in Germany, their National kit had a drastic rework after 1945.

Do further research and you can see why it has really been done. Lol
There is no evidence that it is anything other than a design brain fade which has made the papers a lot of clicky advertising revenue in their comments section.

Now politicians, desperate for votes, are wading in.

It was a change that wasn't needed and was unnecessary. It's also costing me a lot in Pringles as all the outrage is worth sitting and viewing. Lee Anderson has said any more of this and he is on the first flight to Rwanda. So if you could just put up with one more silly design change (maybe an England tracksuit in rainbow colours) he can go and we can then put things back to how they were before.

The ‘stadium’ version (pretty much equal to what the Albion play in week in week out) is *cough* only £85. It’s the authentic version that’s £125. Still OTT. £50 is plenty
I'd hope folk don't buy the shirt because of that. Shame, as apart from the flag weirdness it's one of the best they've had for me. The last one at the World Cup being the worst I can remember.

I have always felt that the symbolism of England should be a tribute to the hard working men and women who made England what it is not some dumb old Christian. My grandad didnt go to war because of some medieval dragon slayer
