You should have heard Brexity old drink driver Peter Shilton doing mental gymnastics on Radio 4 to try and condemn it.

'Our colours are red white and blue'. No, Peter, the England flag is just red and white.
'I'm a traditionalist'. Well, you'll be pleased to know there's only been a flag on the kit since the 2000s.
'It's just all a bit.......woke'. Is is now? How exactly? And what does that mean?

FFS indeed.

The fact it annoys these people would probably make me buy one if it didn't cost around 120 quid.
I know. I'm toying with binning the lovely face of Magic Man and using it as my user pic.

Nicky Campbell is doing a phone in on it now. This should be fun. But he should be allowed to do a phone in on it because he's Scottish!

"The England flag is a symbol of unity" says Emily Thornberry.

How thick are these people?

Well it should be a more fun listen than yesterday's phone in about having your dog put down.

There's some designer sitting at Nike HQ right now with his head in his hands as this latest storm rages in our collective tea-cups just thinking "I went to school for this?"
Did you mean art school?

I BET you, if Nike had just used different shades of red for the cross, there wouldn't be even 1% of the UPROAR.

People are odd. Let's just forget about the other kit we've previously had which had loads of tiny little crosses of different colours across the shoulders.

I just spent 10 minutes online trying to find a picture of what the collar used to look like. I couldn't find a single pic.

But I did find this (below). And I was outraged. Why was there not a national furore! Look at the shape of it!

It.

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
It's not something I'm going to get upset about, but it's not the Saint George's Cross any more. is it?

The Union Jack is sometimes depicted in a different colourway, but it's still very clearly the Union Jack as the design is unique and iconic.

If you take a cross and change the colours, it's just a cross in different colours.
I agree, the Union Flag/Jack is sometimes represented in different colours and I have no problem using say, a beach towel, or a T-shirt that has this.

However those things are not being worn by someone representing their country, and this shirt is supposed to be the players replica shirt, hence the higher price.

So yes it's now just a weird cross on the collar and nothing to do with St George or England.....but it should be.

"People died for that flag thousands of years ago" says taxi driver from Coventry.

I kid you not.

Jess from Halifax agrees.

"You cannot go around changing the national flag"

It's not a flag.

(Perhaps the players should run around waving a little flag.)

Nicky Campbell is clearly having fun laughing at mad English people.

The current caller genuinely thinks that the FA have actually changed the actual English flag.

I don't think I can listen to any more of these lunatics. No wonder we have had 13 years of shit tory governments.

Nicky Campbell is one of the best broadcasters we have - in my opinion. He handles idiot callers brilliantly. I should listen to his shows more but I’ve just got out of the habit of putting the ‘radio’ on.

What station? I’m going to tune in for a laugh.

Have to applaud Nikes fishing trip with this.

Out of interest, did any other teams with exactly the same template get a playful update to their flag on the collar?

Edit - I'm on. First words I heard were someone saying "it's not about racism.." and then ppl shouting over them. Haha. Just rewound to the start. I have to say though, this is really low hanging fruit. Makes me feel a bit dirty listening to it, like when I go on the shed end whenever Chelsea lose.

I promised myself not to do it, but I did, I weakened and popped into this thread for kicks and giggles....all very predictable..... the left all shouting derision and scorn at the "flag-shaggers" ... I filled my bingo card very quickly.....

I simply ask, would any other national team, anywhere, be accepting of change of the flag of the nation as it exists and has existed for centuries, as a representation of the nation, on any emblematic uniform or sporting kit?

Forgive me, but I've had enough of this story now.
BUT
If Nike do change the flag on the back, will this shirt become a collectors item? Therefor we should all go out and buy one.

Yes. We've done it before.

Hope that helps.

Utterly pathetic, performative outrage from the perennially offended. Utterly laughable to reaction to the cross detail.

The real scandal is the price. In a cost of living crisis, no doubt many thousands of parents will be inundated with requests to shell out over £100 for these shirts in a tournament year.

FWIW. I quite like it. If it didn't cost the earth I'd even be tempted to buy one. I'll stick with my retro 66 one for now.
