Sydney, from a boat out on the harbour is really nice. Rome the most interesting and beautiful too. Paris and Amsterdam aren't bad either

Personally I prefer an evolving city like London, Liverpool or New York. Whilst cities like Florence are undoubtedly beautiful they are more akin to a precious museum piece than a live and beautiful woman.

edited...re Siena, I don't think that there's anywhere else I would prefer to be than Siena during the four days of Palio. It must be even better if you have local friends and you don't have to keep worrying about pictures, and you can just enjoy the atmos......aahhh
On the matter of the Palio, I get just as enthused about the way the locals keep the spirit of the event going throughout the year. Those little groups of kids, practising drumming and flag waving in quiet corners of the city, during February, the contrade meals on odd feast days, the scarves worn on Sundays. It's not just for tourists.
The Republic of Siena lives on.

I am with you on that Lord B. Visited here on a day trip from Florence when on honeymoon, like it so much we went back and stayed there the following year. Fond memories of wandering around in the warmth of the evening (what is that they call it in Italy, "Passiageto" or something), listening to some quality busking, hearing an impromptu performance in the Piazza Del Campo from an enthusiastic Dutch youth brass orchestra, enjoying ice creams in a parlour overlooking this view and hearing the good natured singing and dancing (from all ages) of the various groups practising for the "Palio".
PS La Rochelle in France also wants a lot of beating and has the added bonus of being by the sea. Not sure if it is a city though?

Yes totally agree although Kotor in Montenegro runs it pretty close.
