Great film. I think it won an Oscar as well. I watched it just before I moved to Berlin which gave it a bit of extra resonance for me.

Brilliant stuff, you may also like Good Bye Lenin more of a uplifting black comedy on the fall of the berlin wall. The directors said this film allowed the to make the life of others, if you watch the extra features on the DVD the interview with Ulrick Muhe (think thats his name) who was actually watched by the East German goverment.

My sister has Goodbye Mr Lenin so I'll give it a watch.

US I'll also take a look at DownFall, it is rated higher. I strongly advise you to watch The Lives of Others though.

Bruno Ganz's performance is right up there in the top 5 of the last 20 years along with

Christian Bale - The Machinist
Liam Neeson - Schindler's List
Ralph Fiennes - Schindler's List

Too right, what a performance by Bruno Gantz. The Lives of Others is well worth a viewing.

Downfall has had criticism from people as it " humanizes Hitler ". I dis agree it shows him as a madmad who has lost the plot. After all his was evil but he was " human " who loved his Dogs etc etc. The film showed this superbly.

My best ever performance of all time is probably Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.

It was a great performance and was worth of the Oscar but I wouldn't say it was the greatest ever performance. We will have our own opinions though I am sure..

The Lives of Others is an outstanding film. I think I got the tip on here, maybe MoH. On the same basis I'll have to give Downfall a try.

My favourite De Niro performance was in Cape Fear.

De Niro is miles better in both Raging Bull and King of Comedy.

He suffers in Cape Fear because Robert Mitchum was impossible to better, or even match, from the original.

Come on Uncle, this is supposed to be your specialist subject. You're having a mare.
