Slightly odd thread.

Are people pondering acts whose success and popularity seem disproportionate to their talent on the back of watching Elton John at Glasto?

His comic side is dire, he should have concentrated on acting. He was decent enough in Broadchurch. Seems a nice enough guy but I've never found him funny but then I never found Victoria Wood funny either.

Plus, it's subjective, like music, TV, film, food and pretty much everything else.

There's a reason why Mrs Browns' Boys is still relevant and it's not just because it gets slagged off at every opportunity. Not my cup of tea at all, but some people obviously like it. Same as LH – no-one can say he's 'not funny' when he clearly makes people laugh.

And that wasn't saying much. Trevor McDougnut etc were not a patch on Bob Carolgees and Spit The Dog, The Phantom Flan Flinger etc etc. Even as kids we understood Lenny Henry WAS the Tiswas Weakest Link

All I remember from Lenny Henry was Gdanga My Friend was said a lot at school.

Les Dawson?! Loved him. Lenny was funny at the time when I was 14, I think that was his target audience back then so I guess he hit it.

I loved alternative comedy when it came in with people like Alexis Sayle ….. Does he ever perform nowadays ? I’ve only ever seen him doing interviews in the latter years. One with Stewart Lee was good, Probably writes a lot… Does he still keep tropical fish in his underpants ?

I must admit I like Lenny Henry, definitely watched his show and laughed back then.
This was my favourite character.

i'm not sure you can really criticise LH much when you think how few prominent black tv personalities there were back in the mid 80s? There were only two black kids in our year at school ffs. It's different now and yes he really is a relic (as a comedian) but you gotta respect the fella.

Saying “he should have done acting instead of comedy” rather ignores the fact that a member of an ethnic minority almost certainly stands a better chance of breaking through in comedy then moving to acting than breaking through in acting, a point he himself has made (and plenty of others have agreed with) and is arguably still true to this day
