Saladpack Seagull
Just Shut Up and Paddle
For a few years before his death I had the privilege of helping to care for a wonderful gentleman, Claude Maidment, who also became a friend and something of a mentor. Our mutual love of cricket helped strengthen the bond we had, and something we often spoke of was the time when Bob Willis visited the school where my friend was a teacher to demonstrate bowling techniques and be an "inspiring" sports personality. Bob kindly presented Claude with a stump from the 1981 (?) Edgbaston Test, which I was able to handle when Claude's daughter brought it in to the nursing home where he lived and I worked. Claude found Bob to be a kind, gentle giant, and always held him in the very highest regard. I'm pleased to say that the stump is still safe in the custody of Claude's lovely daughter, with whom I am still in touch. It has become a cherished family heirloom.
