I agree with that ashley. Also I suppose the Metioric rise in these music tv stations such as MTV and VH1 and the music download sites on the web, was the final nail in the coffin.

?!

It died when it moved from Thursdays - kids couldn't talk about it at school the next day.

It's sad to see it go but its glory days are gone.

I remember in the 80s when the following week's charts were largely decided by what bands were on TOTP.

If you were on, it was almost certain you'd go up the charts the following week.

There were a few basic rules as I recall:

You couldn't be on two weeks in a row unless you were at number one.

You could only be on if you'd moved up the charts that week (or were a non mover at Number one).

You had to be in the Top 40 to get on in the first place.

I assume it'll be repeated at some randomly late hour.

Is it worth watching?

Meteoric rise?

June 2006 MTV UK share of viewing: 0.2%
VH1 share of viewing: 0.1%

August 1998 MTV UK share: 1.0%, VH1 UK share: 1.0%

Slow and painful death is a better term for them; as it is VH2 is closing imminently due to lack of viewers.

I used to work for the German incarnation of VH1, essentially looking after the tape library.

I miss the days leading up to the frequent Hasselhoff specials and having to watch his videos over and again checking for technical faults.

I miss having a Frank Sinatra obituary sitting in my drawer months before the old crooner died.

I miss opening up the daily music news tape (which was flown in from Hamburg) after the Euro 96 defeat and finding a post it inside with the message "Ha, Ha we had you English Johnnies"

But most of all I miss them referring to Geri Halliwell as Gerry Adams throughout a Spice Girls special.

German incarnation? I thought there was a UK feed and a Europe feed and thats that. Theres a German/Austrian/Swiss MTV1 and there was an MTV2 with the same coverage that they brutally murdered last year... but I've never seen a German VH1.

Indeed, the version thats now supplied by satellite to Germany is the exact same one provided to France, Holland, the Czech Republic and a few other countries.
