I see the third series of The Killing has started on BBC4....I didn't catch the first two series....can I start watching the third series, or should I just record it, buy the box sets of the first two series, and watch it all in order?

totally diff story.. so you could go straight for watching this one.. then box sets will give you some background info....
its v v good... although iplayer or recording is easiest as you cant reply to texts, go to the loo, kitchen or anything else whilst the subtitles are on!!!
ps.. if you didnt watch earlier in year, thoroughly recommend getting hold of the bridge if that is on box set - top class!

Can definately go in with the third series
Would recommend catching up and watch one then two as Lunds personal story is relevant
Absolutely loved first two ( but the Bridge is my favourite)......but small gripe thought few loose ends not really cleared up at the end of both series....but a classy series all the same

I've skimmed the posts here in case of inadvertent spoilers, but I've yet to watch series 2 (not 'season' you Yankophiles) and am keeping series 3 until I have caught up. I'm positive they'll hark back to previous happenings.

Essentially a murder occurs. A female detective who is worth a go and wears knitwear and a few male officers then delve into the investigation. Each episode takes you on a wild goose chase and then the reveal at the end of each episode is that it is not the person they were looking for. One case continues for a whole series. It has it's moments but is not brilliant.

I can't wait for this; it's definitely one of the best tv series I have ever watched.
I've also just seen they are making an American version, which I don't have high hopes for:
In late July 2012, US network FX ordered a pilot episode to be made of the series for an American audience. It is to be set in the US and Mexico and the discovery of a body on the border of the two countries sets the story in motion. Meredith Stiehm who has previously worked on Cold Case and Elwood Reid of Hawaii Five-O are involved in the production

A fair criticism of the first series, but ...
the first series has some wonderful character development - the way they show the gradual, subtle collapse of Pernille & thingy's marriage under the strain of having daughter murdered is brilliant.
And the second season has a less obvious rhythm to the plot, doesn't it?

Ignore Nibble. It was most excellent. The first series, that is. The second enjoyable, but much sillier than the first, which had an amazing triumvirate of murder case, political mystery, and the extreme remorse felt by parents who'd lost their child.
This series has started slowly, but it'll pick up pace in no time. It couldn't match the first, but it's honestly unmissable TV. Better than The Bridge, which was enjoyable, but ultimately absurd.

How f***ing DARE you! haha! It's not that it is unenjoyable or badly made, and is worth watching but don't be fooled into thinking just cos it's a scandy, moody and atmospheric piece it's got to be brilliant.

Yeah i know. The formula has been repeated now again and again, and whilst i watch pretty much all of them, the standard has dropped a little. Borgen is effing class though and i can't wait for the next series of that. Maybe one of the best things about this being a "scene" at all is that the actors are so few that you get a feeling of connectivity with them all when they pop up in nearly every drama. I was overjoyed to see the Herman Munster-esque police chief who's been a mainstay for almost every Killing episode turning up as a troubled and physically tortured homeless person in the Bridge. Ace.
They're right to bring Lund's doings to a close. She'd been through enough already.
