The Joke That Is The Free Bus Travel Zone

I think walking/cycling/driving to Hassocks to get a train sounds feasible.

I'm sure it does, but I might as well drive to Patcham in the time it would take.

Personally I would scrap the idea of including travel costs in the ticket prices. Some people save money as a result, others who do not or cannot utilise the travel available are paying for something they don't use.

I agree, but it would add other complications with the park and ride sites.

I have asked the club.

They gave me wrong information that was only corrected when I pointed out there weren't any services covered.

The point of the thread was to find out if we were just unlucky in Hurst or if the problem was more universal. I guess the title was probably a bit OTT, but came from being fed up with the club's response.

If one of the sages who was responding as if I was an idiot earlier is to be believed and the map on the B&H website is the definitive source of information, then it seems the club's map is very misleading and needs to be changed, as there's very few buses operated by B&H in the centre of that zone.

So you failed to notice the operated by and you have not fully read either the club's travel guide or the information that was extracted from it which was posted earlier, which clearly gives details on which bus operators are covered by the scheme.

Your inability to actually read and understand information is staggering to say the least. All of your complaints would have been avoided if you actually read and understood the detail.

Can I suggest that for the next home game you hope on the bus that doesn't accept the Albion's travel voucher and either refuse to pay so that the bus doesn't move, or you pay our fare and retain the ticket and when you arrive at the Amex ask to see the Travel Manager who no doubt will fully agree with your minority view and immediately refund the cost of your ticket, and arrange for for a personal taxi to pick you up in future so that you can fully benefit from the travel option.

Have you ever thought of moving to Higher Bevendean
Two minute walk to Lewes Rd and onto the no 23/25 bus.
If you time it right ten minutes from my doorstep to DICKS :drink:
That's if I JOG

One last time. The club gave incorrect information when asked to clarify. They didn't realise themselves that there were no services in the area.

The time I didn't notice the operated by bit was when I first looked up Brighton & Hove bus services 2 years ago, not recently. The recent enquiry was due to the change in what was covered that has never been explained in the travel guide (even when Metrobus was part of the arrangement, they were not named as such).

Another question for those who may know.

There are routes listed on the Brighton & Hove website that are "operated" by other companies. Are these like a subcontract setup?

I only ask because Compass Bus also run services round here. Some of them are on the B&H website and some of them are not.

If my theory is correct about subcontracted routes, surely these are still B&H routes so should be covered, regardless of who is "operating" them.

I might be off down a blind alley here so I'd be grateful if someone who knows can explain how it works.
That's a perfectly reasonable question and it is easy to see how the confusion arises. The Brighton & Hove Bus & Coach Company is a local bus company. Brighton & Hove City Council are a local transport authority that, amongst other things, subsidises some bus routes with in the city. Both organisations are called, by some people, "Brighton and Hove".

Among the bus services subsidised by Brighton & Hove City Council are some services operated by Compass Bus and the Big Lemon, for example routes 16, 16A, 37, 37B and 66 (all run by Compass) and route 52 (run by the Big Lemon). Are these included in the Club's Travel Scheme? It would be odd if they weren't, because you can buy Brighton & Hove Saver Tickets on these Compass and Big Lemon services and the subsidy comes from what some people call Brighton & Hove. But Compass Bus services that run in Lewes aren't included in the Club's Travel Scheme and not all Big Lemon services are subsidised by the Council..

The original poster is being perfectly reasonable to ask the Club to clarify what services are included in the Scheme. The current wording is confusing and there are quite a lot of bus services "in the Zone" which don't take part in the scheme. To those who have said that the Club shouldn't be expected to know which bus routes run in the Zone, I say that it's easy to find out. Pick up a copy of the current edition of the Brighton & Hove Bus Times (published by the Brighton & Hove Bus & Coach Company, not the City Council) and you will find it includes the times of every bus that runs in the city and most of the surrounding area, including routes run by other operators. The last time I was in the North Stand reception area there was a huge pile of Bus Times available, free of charge, to anyone who wanted to pick one up.

Congratulations 9 pages and counting due to you disagreeing with everyone who understands the position. I'm sure that the Guiness World Record people will be calling on you shortly and fame and future will follow so that you can buy your own bus to ensure a free ride.

For what it's worth ... I understand the position and I agree with Sully. The Club's publicity material is confusing and, in some respects, incorrect.

If others contributed a sensible response that actually helped to clarify the position, as Lord Bracknell has just done, it would have helped.

I should have known that half term was a bad time to ask a question.

So a response is only helpful if it agrees with your view rather than the facts.
Can I suggest you write to the club and say that you and a few others dont understand the travel guide and could you therefore have your own Janet and John version. Hopefully that will keep you happy.

I was thinking more of Metro bus, which is far better than Sussex Bus Co on all fronts. That would mean a walk to Stonepound X roads or 273 from Crawley although only every 2 hours.

By the time you have walked to Stonepound, you might as well walk the last 200yds and get the train from Hassocks!

I have already told you (and others) that I have corresponded with the club and I understand what the travel guide says. The response from the club suggested it's not clear to them either, so perhaps you could write the Janet and John version for them as it is so simple.

The point of putting it on here was to try to find out if the gap in service is unique to my area and I have found that services in Lewes are also not covered. I just think that the presentation of the available services by the club could be clearer as it promises much and appears to not live up to it.

Change to 25 at St Peters right to the gates virtually 273 goes through Hurst but not very often.

Indeed. Worked a treat for Saturday games last season. Shame it's no longer available.

It was never feasible for evening games, though, as they don't run back late enough.

If the above is true what is the point of complaing as you will be aware which buses ate within the scheme. It just seems you want to complain for the fun of complaining. The first tespinse from the club is factually correct in that Hurstpierpoint is within the border as ate many other areas which dont have a bus going down every road and street. Your cooment regarding Lewes is irrelevant given that Brighton and Hove buses do travel between Lewes and Falmer but you clearly want to include this to justify your inability to accept alternative views. To see how far adrift you are from everyone else start a poll.

Try getting to the matches from mid-Wales!

It's a shame that you don't have a door to door service, but trains from Hassocks seem fairly regular although admittedly it may mean having to walk or bike a couple of miles to the station.

Life isn't always perfect.
