Jeremy Corbyn has sacked Hilary Benn in the early hours of this morning after it was revealed that the shadow foreign secretary was preparing to lead a coup against the Labour leader.

It's often been said that Labour just don't do political assassinations. I suspect that this is about to change. The prospect of a snap election around November is a real one, as whoever takes over has no mandate at all for what's to come. The Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) is alive to this possibility and foresees oblivion with Corbyn at the helm. They will get one crack at this and it has to be very soon indeed. I'd be surprised if the PLP hadn't ganged up on him in some way before this time next week.
