What now? Lost a confidence vote 172 to 40

If they force a leadership election it looks as though he may not even get on the ballot paper and the membership will not be able to vote for him. I love it when socialists come up with pseudo-democratic processes to try and ensure they get the right result. The law of unintended consequences means that they sometimes don't.

It's an interesting situation. Corbyn was elected by the Labour Party membership, less than 400,000 people. Now he has had a vote of no confidence from MPs representing more than 7 million constituents who voted them into parliament.

In the aftermath of last week’s referendum, our country faces major challenges. Risks to the economy and living standards are growing. The public is divided.
The government is in disarray. Ministers have made it clear they have no exit plan, but are determined to make working people pay with a new round of cuts and tax rises.

Labour has the responsibility to give a lead where the government will not. We need to bring people together, hold the government to account, oppose austerity and set out a path to exit that will protect jobs and incomes.

To do that we need to stand together. Since I was elected leader of our party nine months ago, we have repeatedly defeated the government over its attacks on living standards.
Last month, Labour become the largest party in the local elections. In Thursday’s referendum, a narrow majority voted to Leave, but two thirds of Labour supporters backed our call for a Remain vote.

I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning. Today’s vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy. We are a democratic party, with a clear constitution. Our people need Labour party members, trade unionists and MPs to unite behind my leadership at a critical time for our country.”

He needs 51 MPs support to get on the ballot paper (unless he gets on it automatically, which can be challenged legally) but he only has the support of 40 MPs.

He needs 91 MPs to form a complete front bench team.

Now that the left have got into power in the Labour Party they will never give it up willingly and they probably still have a majority of the rank and file behind them so will win any leadership contest. The Labour Party will have to break up and reform as two seperate parties, on to the left and one centre left, if they are ever going to form a centre left government again. A left wing government is never going to happen.

He's in this mess because he didn't actively support the Remain campaign, possibly because he isn't committed to the EU but possibly equally because he saw it would be a mess for Cameron and used it for political opportunism!!! That's now backfired dramatically and there is no way back.

Been watching BBC news all afternoon and they're interviewing people at a rally in Leeds who are in a similar parallel universe.

From the MPs they're interviewing, lots of talk about Corbyn spending most of his time preaching to the converted at left wing rallies, and the raft of new Labour members not getting involved with on the ground campaigning.

They are according to BBC, but there are only 20 of them, if the same % support JC, that will give him another 3....Only 7 more needed...

They will have to fight as independents with no party organisation to finance them whilst the official Labour Party candidate opposed them, they would be wiped out and the official Labour Party would romp home. The public won't tolerate the antics of these Blairite idiots lightly

They're not all Blairites. It doesn't mean this is a centrist action either. If the left like yourself could just stop for a moment, you'd ask yourself whether someone with exactly the same views as Corbyn is better placed to lead the party? Corbyn doesn't hold exclusive rights to honest, left wing policies. This is about someone who doesn't appear to reach out to people, doesn't send out a convincing message, isn't inspiring new people to follow the Labour Party. It seemed like he could at first, but he has failed. Doesn't necessarily need a move to the right for a leader, just someone who can inspire a bit of confidence, a bit of conviction.
