You can't have a defining Jam song sorry, they were all built (not written) impeccably. Although the band were the first since the Beatles to have three no.1's straight in, I don't feel they get the punditry they deserve. By the way, word has it Foxton has been working with Weller lately... you never know!

I think they met up again when Bruce's wife was very ill & passed away i beleve, then on meeting again Foxton played on a couple of tracks on the last weller album...
Bruce also played with Weller at Albert hall, when Weller introduces him on stage its a goosebump moment...its on youtube...he plays eton rifles...
Foxton & Buckler were both playing in "from the jam" a tribute band to themselves (bit weird) but saw them a few times as a mate of a mate is the front man
(Russell Hastings from Bognor) bur Rick Buckler left ther band without giving a reason or telling them to their face...he apparantly just sent an email...
as i was too young to see the real Jam to see Buckler with the sticks playing to Foxton's thumping bass was still pretty special...
I caught Rick's drumstick at end of one gig in Chichester, it was a great gig, neville Staple of the specials supported them...

Great live band, I was lucky enough to see them at the top rank, the dome and the centre.

"Little Boy Soldier" is without doubt the best song ever, off the Eton Rifles album. A band that I had the pleasure of seeing over 20 times and broke my heart when they (ie Paul Weller) broke them up.
Hated the style council and have never forgiven him the greedy s*it.
They were a real band.
Just reading through the thread again reminded me that we had "English rose" as the background to our wedding video. Real shame the marriage only lasted 3 years and I have never seen the ex since October 1989.......

That does not make him a tosser. It makes him a very wealthy man who wants the best education for his children. You must remember when he penned them lines he was a very angry young man. Peoples opinions and view tend to change as they grow up and become parents themselves, as opposed to being the angry child...I meet Weller years ago in a hotel lobby and he went out of his way to sign a Style Council cd I had in the car and had a quick chat, top fella.

As a youngster The Jam rather passed me by, I was a skinhead and listened to Oi and Ska/Two Tone. But as I got older The Jam got me hooked a little too late to see them live. Now I love them and Weller himself. I think for me The Butterfly Collector was a defining song for them and one of my favourites. But there are loads and loads of different stuff, depending on your mood. Their live stuff is superb and both The Jam and Weller's solo stuff is always on my ipod.

I am an avid collecter of all things Jam/Weller! Was lucky enough to go to the "Wake up Woking" gig last year that Weller did for the local hospice. The original 4th Jam member Steve Brookes warmed up & Bruce Foxton came on towards the end & did Art School & Eton Rifles - being too young to see The Jam, that was a real moment for me! Was also lucky enough to meet the great man a couple of times. Once backstage in New York when he played a one off "Jam Night" a few years back. The other was outside the Brighton Centre where he signed my Weller custom Lambretta! Contrary to popular belief, he is genuinely a nice bloke! As for fav tune, it changes every week! This week I'm going for "Girl on the Phone"

PS - if you are looking for any recordings of the last Jam tour - stear clear of any Brighton Centre bootlegs, the quality is awful! There's some bootlegs of the last Wembley gigs that are brilliant. One in particular called "going, going, gone" is quality. Sure you can pick it up on flea - bay! Will gladly swap for a Brighton Centre '82 ticket?!!

Tubestation, Strange Town and the whole Gift Album for me, plus seeing them at the Rainbow touring Funeral Pyre was one of my first gigs and opened my ears to what horns could do for a band....

I was lucky enough to be in the Top Of The Pops studio when The Jam made their debut appearance with 'In The City'. Can just be seen in TOTP2 Youtube clip! Rick Buckler gave me and my brother a cassette of their just-released first album in the BBC bar after they'd been on. Still got it somewhere. The cassette that is, not the BBC bar.

Did anybody see them play in front of about 9 people at Crawley College? They were the support act for Little Bob Story in 1976 or so.

Best band of a generation, love 'Down in the Tubestation at Midnight' and for some reason I love 'English Rose'. Favourite album is All Mod Cons. I was at their last concert but the gig earlier in the final tour was better.

That isnt the reason i think he's a tosser, there are other reasons for that, but i do think he's a typical champagne socialist.
