Just Who is the 5 O'Clock Hero?

The Gift

But so many more songs are close runners up. Butterfly Collector, Strange Town, Town Called Malice, That's Entertainment. Superb band, superb last show, Weller has never bettered the Jam IMO.

really like their album. some very good lyrics in there (whoever wrote them )

want to see them live... and the rifles may i add.

I'm going to see The Rifles tonight in Manchester. Saw The Enemy earlier this year, and the comparisons with The Jam are valid, very passionate and energetic, and the lyrics are similar.

Album: All Mod Cons or Setting Sons
Single: Strange Town, Start or Tube Station
Songs: again, too many to choose from but Mr Clean, Butterfly Collector, and Place I Love would have to figure. Also rather partial to their cover of Heatwave.
Saw them at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff in '81 (I think) at the peak of their powers. Top quality live band.

I was a bit apprehensive before the gig, as not heard any of their songs before, but now I'm a convert. They were excellent, the songs are a good mix of up and down tempo, they play them very well, the comparisons with The Jam are well warranted.

Only downside is the GOONS in the audience singing 'We are the mods' between every song.

Tried to get the album when I got home from Amazon, but it has been deleted for some odd reason, managed to download it from Play.com at 320bps (and cheaper than iTunes) so very pleased.

Thoroughly recommended.

Sounds a treat, will be booking tickets asap.

Yeah there was all that when i saw "from the jam" at brighton centre, which was slightly annoying. People were even throwing pints on stage up until the point where Bruce Foxton said "if someone throws one more we're off and not coming back". Why you'd go to a gig to throw beer at them I'll never know.

Setting Sons.

And Going Underground, with an honourable mention to Eton Rifles.

A legend in their day, but... I am also in concurrence with those who think everything Weller has done since has been tosh, especially the Style Council.

He played here a couple of weeks ago. I was washing my hair.

I find it interesting the amount of support on here for "Eton Rifles". I seem to recall that when that song came out it was criticised quite a lot by Jam fans, personally I thought it OK, but I remember a lot of fans describing it as the poorest Jam song ever, and generally giving it a wide berth, to the point of some describing it as utter shit.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant. One of the most impressive attributes of The Jam is that from "This the Modern World" which is pretty average every other single they released was superb and most improving on the one before until Funeral Pyre by which time they had peaked.

All Mod Cons is my favourite album by any artist from the 1978-82 (ie post-punk/pre-new romantic) era. Setting Sons and Sound Affects not far behind.

Unlike a lot of people on here I thought the Style Council were the bollocks. I also happen to think that Our Favourite Shop was just about the best album by any artist from the 80s. "Ever Changing Moods" is, for me anyway, probably the best pop single ever made.

An absolute god. Imho, his latest album is his best since Wild Wood.

It was one of the few songs guaranteed to get EVERYONE moving during my 6th form discos.

'Eton Rifles' - When I first heard it I thought the title was 'he's a right fool'.

Listen again and you will agree.

Truffle and Jambo, I agree, pretty much hits the nail on yhe head. At that time I was knocking around with quite a big group of Scooter Boys/MODS/Punks, all of us big Jam fans. When that single came out I just remember there was quite a bit of anti feeling towards it, unlike other Jam releases. We all went mental for tickets for the last ever show, certainly we were all fans, just for some reason that song was disliked.

Question for anyone else who ever saw them live, what did you think of their live performances? I am not asking how good were the gigs, they were superb, but what did you think of their actual performances? For me I thought they were pretty awful performers, but possible the best ever gigs.

I saw them twice at the Brighton Centre, once on the Sound Affects tour and once on the Gift tour. Missed out on the last ever gig which I'm really disappointed about. I thought they were excellent but would like to have seen them at a smaller venue.
