However, in 73 we were the first european family to stay in a long-house we visited in the Jungle in Sarawak. Amazing experience for an eight year old spending the night with the Dayak family.

It depends what you mean as improved. It's huge, something like 16 million people live there and i didn't see a single low rise building. It feels though like a Western City (just full of Chinese people) and most of the people that I met were very well off. Got a feeling though thats it these sort of places where China is going to have problems when the next generation comes through.
