Can we please have less tolerance for posters who persist in typing "would of", "could of" and "should of"? Perhaps a private warning for the first offence, public warning for second offence, 3 days ban for third offence, 3 months ban for fourth offence and permanent ban after five offences?

I feel your frustration, but you know where you are with rules. Imagine being in a country where you can drive anywhere, because there is no rule telling you not to.

See this video of the chaos of the Arc de Triomphe.

It's almost expected for drivers to make death-defying lane changes (you have to imagine the lane markings, as there aren't any).

I'd suggest giving Lewes a miss on Nov 5th

If anyone feels particularly like plotting me on their Venn Diagram I am definitely right of centre and also one of the Moderators on here. I’ve been a contributor on NSC for over 22 years and a moderator for about the last 18 months or so (possibly longer - I can’t fully recall). But I can honestly say that if anyone believes moderating decisions and infractions are motivated by political allegiances then they are mistaken.

Moderating isn’t about ‘cancelling’ anyone or anything - but about trying to ensure the debate remains broadly civilised and NSC remains one of the best forums going.

If I ever feel I need to moderate content or discuss an issue with the other moderators I always try to think “what would Lord Bracknell have done?” I’ll never get close to his levels, but it’s a good aspiration and for me, he remains the perfect role model.

A right wing moderator who is unfailingly courteous, and whose humour has lubricated NSC since before I was in shorts ???

But there is evidence, from the Netherlands, that removing all road markings and traffic controls results in fewer accidents.

Oh, just ban him and be done with it - would make things a lot more pleasant all round!

You can do what I've done, of course. We all can.

Except the moderators. They can't.

Think of that. It must make NSC absolute hell for them.

For me what's gone (if it ever was here in the first place) is the ability to have a written debate with someone holding the opposite opinion.

One poster writes X and 99% of us are waiting for their alter-ego poster to write the exact opposite, and so it begins.
Fortunately we don't have to wait long.

Nobody reads the opposite side.
Nobody thinks about the opposite side.
Nobody acknowledges that view point.

It's even happening on this thread.
'My opinion is right I don't care what you say'

I'll.occasionally play along but soon tire of the repetitive nature I genuinely have no idea how the main combatants have the stamina for it.

And that's one of the worst aspects of how things have become.

Pretty much any discussion that is likely to have strong opposing opinions very quickly gets pulled back to the same tired old battles, often between the same people. They know by now that the "other side" is never going to suddenly say, after all these years, "Oh hang on, you have a point there, I'm going to completely change my entrenched position", but still they go on, often getting nastier and nastier.

The Bear Pit was supposed to help solve this problem and, to a degree, I guess it has worked in that many of these battles can now take place out of sight of those who have no interest in getting involved, but it hasn't enabled those who are able to engage in strong, passionate debate without becoming abusive to discuss these topics as well.

And maybe I'm being too optimistic. Maybe that ship has sailed and we can't enable those discussions here. Society has become so fractured and that's reflected online in social media and media comments sections.

But, let's give it a try, eh, otherwise the bad actors win.

If you have strong opposing views to others, you have three choices...

1. Debate and represent your views forcibly without resorting to abuse.
2. Decide "we're never going to agree on this" so I'll leave it now.
3. Become abusive to those who hold an opposing view.

...but know that taking option 3 will soon preclude you from ever taking options 1 and 2.

You mean that's not how you're meant to drive on roundabouts?

This is a good idea, we could have an HMP NSC for banned posters.

Nobody else can read it or post in it except for 1 hour every month.

And you can only read it if you shove a mobile phone and a wrap of crack up your arse before you log on.

But there is evidence, from the Netherlands, that removing all road markings and traffic controls results in fewer accidents.

It's one of the ideas underlying shared space schemes like on New Road, if you take the markings off so there's no clear divide between different types of road users, people are compelled to be more aware of what's around them.

That said, I wouldn't suggest extending the practice to motorways.

Edit: How the hell have I ended up writing about highway design on this thread? I only logged on to post a simpsons reference

...............and of course, that definition of 'neutral' applies just as equally to the left wingers as to those on the right. As always, one side (whichever is the side you agree with) is making a valid complaint, whie the snowflakes/gammon* on the other side are just making a fuss over nothing because they're wrong.

*delete as approriate.

It's the broflakes I worry about. The g***** left the building after Trump was defeated and the tories legalized gay marriage

I do sometimes raise an eyebrow at your idea of balance: for every racist thug there is some snowflake complaining about racist thugs

Edit: I'm happy to stop using the g word if people stop being the g word. Or until I'm told to not use the g word. Whichever the sooner.

I’m surprised more of our right of centre sensible posters don’t get more up in arms about some of the poster’s claiming to be of the same mind, and yet those right of centre still need binoculars to see them. No doubt they’re a lot closer to shaking hands to those stood left of the centre than those on the horizon to the right.

Shame there isnt an option in the user cp for people to hide forums, because The Bear Pit would be the first one on my list. I've been on NSC for years, before this username. NSC was fun.

I'm not sure that I like this new HWT full of positive praise and acclaim. To be honest it scares me a little.

I'm going on the list, aren't I

One of my best pals at work (till he jumped ship for double the salaray) is extremely right wing. Or was. Twenty five years ago he was a rough 'first in the family to go to uni' diamond who didn't even need to discuss the obvious fact that you can't trust foreigners or women, and would refer to liberals and socialists as 'your sort'. But he's smart. As he got increasingly successful he found he was employing women and foreigners (if they were the best candidates, which they often were). And one of his star young colleaguse is gay and black. And he found himself quite opposed to the party and the attitudes that once he would have embraced without a thought. It isn't about what you bring to the table, it's about what you do with it as circumstances and experiences change you.

It is of course right that snowflakes (and all decent people) should complain about racist thugs. The difficulty some snowflakes have is being unable to recognise that anyone who doesn't agree with everything they say is not necessarily a racist thug.

I'd place myself on the centre on average, with views spread across the "one nation conservative" to "more methodist than marxist Labour" bland band.

On the odd occasion I've made a point from the right, I've got back a cautious acceptance that I might have a point from who I was replying to.

The posts I make from "the left" aren't even remotely left wing, yet somehow manage to draw far more argument and disagreement.

There's too much divide on here but It doesn't help when there's a certain moderator constantly looking for reactions on here through abusive and personal posts made at the same users time after time. Moderators need to set the standard instead of just giving orders. No one should be able to entitle themselves to abusing others regardless of the excuse.

Mate, I understand your narrative but I struggle to identify the actors. I am unaware of anyone on here (let alone a swarm of them) whose schtik is to falsely accuse others of racism. We have one poster who has been banned in the past for racism and posts almost nothing but racist innuendo. I'm not aware of any other (overtly) racist posters, just the occasional foolish remark, and I'd need to be obsessed about this, with a little black book, if I were to recall any inappropriate push back, let alone a gaggle of posters who scream 'racism' whenever someone posts something (what exactly?) with which they disagree, that isn't racist (I assume you accept that it is not unreasonable to call actual racism racist). Oh, and 'snowflake' is a proper broflake word. Das reich has accused anyone who is not opposed to foreigners, the labour party and homosexuals as a 'snowflake' or 'soy boy'. Please don't align yourself with him. It's really not a good look
