Just to be clear. I love a piss up at the t20 and have been to virtually all finals days and I usually sit in the hollies for test matches (I did for NZ a few weeks ago). I love taking my kids to the blast as they have good family areas where the beer snakes are nowhere to be seen. The kids love it. My lad was so happy with his picture of him with Ian bell. Although not as happy as the one we have with babar azam when he played at edgbaston for Somerset in the championship a couple of years ago. Yes. A 10 year old at championship and he loved it.

It is obvious that when pundits talk about brilliant atmosphere that they are talking about pissed up chanting. The atmosphere at family events is different.

The trouble with the Blast this year has been that the timings were all over the place. I couldn't go last Sunday and I think there was only 1 Friday night at Edgbaston and the rest were in the week. With the kids at school, it might as well have been the middle of the night. The number of spectators will then inevitably be lower for the blast and it will be used as evidence that the Hundred is a success for families which has nabbed all the school holiday slots. I know others have made the point but it's like they want the Blast to fail and the Hundred to succeed at all costs.

As an aside, we are always looking for budding young cricketers at Kenilworth Wardens (or even adults of limited ability when the 5ths are short). I teach the kids whilst the parents have 2 hours of drinking time on a Friday night. What's not to like.

I help out at leek Wootton just down the road! I coach hockey to some of the wardens kids. Keeran U is as good at hockey as he is at cricket (under 14s). My playing days are long gone. Bust my back in 2003 in my early 20s. So now more stroll about.

Agree blast timings were a shambles to fit in hundred. Plus low attendances due to covid rules. This is inconvenient for the ecb. https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/49797557

I thought it was a heap of cr*p.
This is worse than the T20 Blast , the ECB have reached a peak with this circus.
Oh for the days of The Gillette cup and The John Player League on a Sunday afternoon, with continuous County Championship cricket starting on normal weekdays.

Despite all the hype about T20 and the amazing batting skills that have been honed and developed to play it...the first 36 run Over was from a Sunday arvo JPL many many years ago.... A feat rarely repeated.

Ha. Our lads used to play football at Leek Wootton until there was a dust up with Paul who runs it about what I've forgotten. I help with the 10s,11s and 12s at KW. A couple have made it to the Warwickshire teams and the improvement is off the scale. Another reason why the counties are so important.

I know what you mean and look back at that era with great affection. But maybe worth remembering that when the JP League started there were probably quite a few folk moaning about losing the Sunday benefit matches for the pros (not to mention the International Cavaliers games!).

And before we get too misty-eyed about the JP league I recall the Players No. 6 fags being freely given out by their promotional team of babes. Happy days!

I just find the T20s and 100 boring, no skill in throwing the bat at every ball although the fielding is great.

The skill of the longer games is knowing the correct stroke for the ball bowled, field placing for the particular batter and what bowler is being used, knowing the pitch and weather a bowler taking overs to set up a batsman, the longer game is truly the king of all sports…. The 100 is a poor relation from the USA.

I don't agree with that, batsmen have had to learn new strategies and strokes, bowlers new types of deliveries. It's hastened an advancement in the game and has opened it up to a new audience.

My son is playing 100 ball games for his clubs U19 team, I was very sceptical, but they've actually been good fun to watch. The lads have had to adapt, learn a new format and as you said fielding has had to become so much sharper.

I love watching the test matches, they'll be on all day on TMS (or Talk Sport!) but there is a place for these shorter games too.

Yes I have to admit that some of the strokes they have invented are quite impressive.

Maybe I have turned into my dad….he never liked anything new like the metric system or decimalisation and would swear blind that a starting handle was a big loss for motor cars.

I will watch it because it’s cricket but it doesn’t grab me like batting out a draw from the 4th day

Another competition instead 20 x 6 ball overs now 20 x 5 ball. Rubbish not needed. I see BBC bragging about viewing figures. Well it is not hard if you put it on a main channel at peak time. It could well be 20 plus years since cricket on main TV at peak time. Why like Grand Prix,Wimbledon,Euros has Test Cricket not been on BBC . Old Gillette cup now to be played by 2nd teams at same time means ludicrous situation of no first team cricket at hove in 6 weeks in middle of summer.

I saw a bit of this last night and enjoyed it. I thought it did exactly what it was intended to do – present cricket to a new/different generation in a different way than before.

I keep seeing comments from die-hard cricket fans saying how much they don't like it (or worse). To a certain extent, I think that's the point. People don't necessarily want a sporting event that lasts four days – they don't have the time or the concentration. So something like The Hundred fits the bill perfectly.

Having watched, by chance, highlights of the World Cup final (2019, super over, etc) and the Stokes/Leach match-winning partnership in two Sky Sports programmes back-to-back the night before, I thought it showed perfectly how broad cricket is now – literally something for everyone...

Not a matter of like it or not. Just no room on calendar for Championship /. 20/20/ Hundred and 50 over competition. Championship has now gone down from 16 to 14 to 12 games played in spring and Autumn so can see which will go first which is a pity. Apart from been 20x 5 ball overs instead of 20 x 6 very little difference so why didnt they not hype up Big bash and put it on BBC at peak time

It's obviously different enough for a lot of people to lose their shit about!

Counties won’t agree to it basically. The BBC don’t actually want to spend license payers money in a game with 5k spectators with deck chairs out around the boundary. They want every game hyped up like a T20 final which this is.

The hundred is also not effecting the calendar, Counties voted for the fixtures and one day cup fixtures are overlapping this tournament so actually country fixtures aren’t impacted - just player availability.

But that's EXACTLY the point of T20. The Beeb should have got on board with that and we'd at least have something that all the counties were involved in on Prime Time terrestrial. Instead it went to Sky and the chance passed.

Instead we have the Americanisation of the game. It's just T20 with silly rules, franchises and a fraction less drinking time.

Great.
