I think there is a degree of cricket snobbery in some of the anti Hundred musings. I adore cricket and for me a day at a test match is hard to beat. My 9 yo son has caught the bug and thinks it’s the best sport in the world! Took him to the England v Pakistan game trent bridge on Friday and he said it was one of the best nights of his life! We have tickets for the finals day @ Lords and he is telling anyone that listens. If different forms of the game can hook youngsters into the sport it has to be good for the long time health of the sport??

In the same way it was Football snobbery when people got annoyed about the European super League?
There's no reason why a 4th format is needed to get youngsters involved in cricket. And the ECB spending money on it had meant they've spent less money on youth participation etc

I think that’s true, but if that’s the goal (which it should be) then you don’t put most the games on sky and only a handful on terrestrial…

There is obviously some truth in what you say, but if you haven't done so already then I urge you to read the Cricinfo article that Sid gave the link to. (Post #122). It explains the opposition to the scheme is way more than just old men saying "We're traditionalists and we don't like anything new".

And Sussex don't have a team.

I am a Somerset fan who grew up in Devon. If I was a kid now my team is based in Cardiff. Driving time totnes to Cardiff on a Friday is about 5 hours this year. Perfect.

....oh my Christ.

Rise with Birmingham Phoenix, and thrive together as one. Bigger, brighter and better united, this team is a celebration of the strength in diversity. Because different is good.

London Spirit is an iconic team for an iconic city, rooted in tradition and lighting the way to the future, with a unique ability to conjure something special.

Manchester Originals. Pioneers. Revolutionaries. Celebrating a global city of firsts. Laughing in the face of limits. Raising the bar forever higher.

Step aside for Northern Superchargers, a team whose drive and determination is matched only by their desire to win. Powered by positivity and people who get stuff done when every ball counts.

Belong to something bigger, with Oval Invincibles. Vibrant, expressive, and free to play their own way, this team leaves a lasting impression long after the last ball.

Follow Southern Brave, and go boldly where others shy away. Endlessly curious, with an insatiable appetite for adventure, what’s over the horizon?

Join Trent Rockets for the biggest party in the country. Everyone’s invited - so long as you don’t mind having the most fun. Volume up, ready for launch.

Spark the Welsh Fire. Burning bright with intense passion and relentless energy, their hunger will prove the haters wrong. Get ready to feel the heat.

Nothing in that article made me want to watch it. Patronising garbage aimed at people who do not currently watch cricket. The ECB should have put T20 on terrestrial tv if they wanted to broaden the audience even if it meant less money. The Hundred merely dilutes the appeal of the 20 and already waning 50 over games.

I don't really mind batsmen being called batters.

Hero of the match instead of Man of the match is a bit silly.

But having to support Hampshire-Sussex 'Braves' at Southampton is just shitehouse. HampSex. HumpSex. Lol.

I remember there was similar negativity when T20 cricket was introduced and look how that turned out. It is dissapointing that so many are not even willing to give it a chance and have made their minds up before a ball has even been bowled but for the rest of us with an open mind it could be an absolute treat and feast of great cricket in a fun environment. There is nothing wrong with supporting the Brave as many of us are and supporting Sussex, you can do both, they are not in direct competition with each other.

Should be called the McHundred.

What's the first game? South Coast smashers versus the Birmingham Bombers or something? This is the type of tinpottery that the ESL wanted to be.

Sad thing is, I'll probably end up watching it.

How many players will Sussex be missing for the royal London cup I've paid to see Crodo?

Sadly it's 9 players, we will have more unavailable than Durham who we face on Sunday, Gloucestershire, Kent and Middlesex. I know Mills wouldn't have played but it's the very reason this shouldn't be given the time of day before a ball has been bowled because it's already impacted county cricket negatively.

I have no interest in watching or supporting teams that I have no affinity with. I love real cricket, my county and my country.

Deepest, darkest Sussex
IMHO they should have set the franchises up with a "buddy" which then hosts one game a year at the other ground (i.e. Sussex and Hampshire, Birmingham and Worcester etc.) in the same way counties play a game at an outground during the season (e.g. Horsham or Arundel for Sussex). Would have helped spread the game around a bit more.

That's one good thing about the weather forecast being poor for the weekend I suppose - should rain off a few of these 100 games.

Let's give it a chance. It's a good idea to try to simplify the game so it's not too confusing...

The biggest change to current forms of cricket is each 100-ball innings is essentially split into 20 five-ball overs.

All five balls must be delivered by the same bowler but a captain can choose to continue with the same bowler for 10 consecutive balls.

After a set of five balls the umpire will hold up a white card to signal the end of each over, but players will only change ends after every 10 balls - not at the end of each over.

I dont think it's snobbery at all.

For me, the The Hundred epitomises the incompetence of the ECB. They've dropped the ball with our domestic T20 competition and have seen it fall way behind the IPL and Big Bash. They're jealous of the "product" that these other competions have and want their own version. I don't really begrudge that desire. But if they wanted a "product" to rival those other competitions, its so clear that it needs to be shown on domestic tv if it's to get a large broad appeal and reach new fans.

Unfortunately the tv deals they've already struck mean they can't show the domestic T20. So their own incompetence put them in a situation where they can't have a big T20 competition like India or Australia. Instead they've had to create this bastardised version of cricket because they can show that on domestic tv. They have the gall to tell us that it's a great idea, when really its the only way they've been able to dig themselves out of the hole that their other crappy ideas dug for them.

WTF have they done?! Why try and destroy this wonderful sport?!
