Still the best quote EVER.

Although, perhaps, not wholly accurate.

I have been following the four day stuff on the live streams which seem to be getting better. But, shamefully, I have watched the T20 stuff too. Even more shamefully I have enjoyed it a little.

As for the '100' it can go and do one. I know that T20 is important because it's a cash cow, that's why I have accepted it. But I'm not interested in the Southern Skips or Frazzles or whatever they are.

I notice the tickets for the 100 seem uber cheap. Hopefully folk will give it a miss. Although it will be hard if the kids keep belly aching to go.

There are 10,000 at the Oval tonight.

I suppose they are 5 ball overs really. There were 8 ball overs at one stage. I think, in Australia (just before my time).

Yes, they had 8 ball overs in Australia (maybe NZ?) until the late 70s, early 80s ish.

It was a good idea to fit more cricket in by reducing how much time was spent changing ends. The cynical view is they stopped doing it to fit more adverts in.

There was a season of 8-ball overs in England just before the war, but when they came back it was seemingly forgotten and they went straight back to 6.

Going back further, overs have included 4 and 5 balls at different times. In my case overs typically last about 12 balls and gift the opposition about 10wides :lolol:

I did read that a lot of tickets were given away and the prices are pretty low (£15 compared to double for some T20)

Disclaimer

I really don't like the '100' concept and am being an absolute misery guts about it.

It’s not bad. I’m not a purist, enjoy T20, and I’m waiting for Repair Shop to start at 8.

At the end of the day, it's cricket, and it'll be good, because cricket is good.

That doesn't mean the way it's been set up is a good idea for the game as a whole, or that I have to be interested in watching it.

Of course. I like the fact there are loads of kids there.

I remember when the t20 Cup was first set up, I was in year 6 at school, and they handed out free tickets to one of the games to us. I assume I forgot about it and they sat at the bottom of my bag for the next 6 months until it was thrown away after I started secondary school.

The first Sussex game I actually attended was at Hove against Essex in the T20, Ronnie Irani hit a 4 of the last ball to win the game and get to a hundred. I went with my mum, who would never have been able to take me to a 50 over game during the week, but also would never have been able to take me to London or Southampton for a normal domestic game.

At one a point more than 20,000 were watching the Somerset stream last season. I wouldn’t be shocked to see it higher this year. https://www.somersetcountycc.co.uk/...wo-million-views-on-live-streaming-service-2/

And it is not old people watching online.

I simply don’t understand the comments about “old men watch county cricket” - quite true for the 4 day matches obviously because they are during the week so people work. Hardly likely to see lots of working age people there all day for four consecutive days. The blast was full of families and people in Somerset and gloucs really look forward to the annual matches. They are great. Somerset sell out pretty much every single t20. Now Somerset fans have no cricket apart from reserves for the school holidays.

Sussex have a good number of viewers at key times, although not as many as Somerset.

I think counties may be on to something here if they can find a way to monetise streams- advertising etc.

I'm quite enjoying the match, but does anyone else think all the branding is a bit naff?

Oval's badge looks like a sticker the dentist used to give to children, Manchester's looks like a kid drew it, and the chevrons all over the screen are distracting!

Incidentally, while I agree that the 4-day game does not usually get great attendances (although it's better than some people make it out to be), there's been little effort by the ECB to make it relevant.

Why not start games at 2.00 and finish at 8.00 - all grounds have floodlights now, so it's not a problem. You'd have to improve the over rate, but that could be done. Or perhaps a 4.00 to 10.00 game?

Why not experiment with pricing: at the moment, non-members would pay £80 to watch all four days of a Sussex game - introduce a £50 match ticket for all days.

Why not have a double-header so you have a kids or women's game before the match started?

Why not have test match tickets reserved for people who have attended a CC game in the previous season?

Why not a competition where kids can bowl at one of the pros in the nets, with rewards for getting one out?

The only changes that we've seen in the CC since I've been watching cricket is to move to two divisions and to move from three days to four. Let's look at more innovation and get people back

Agree. Nobody makes any effort to promote County game and lack of interest from all who run the game. Must admit there have been days when would have gone but didnt know game on. I of course receive lots of texts emails about every 20/20 game I remember as a child Tony Grieg lining us all up after days play for autographs Doesnt help that sides much weaker than just few years ago. Cant see this improving with players able to earn huge bucks by getting invited to a 20/20 competition. IMaybe I am wrong but if I was asked a way to increase income at Hove I would start on 4 day game. I refuse to believe with poulation 2k plus could not be attracted to each of first 3 days

Agree 100%, the actual cricket has been very enjoyable but the onscreen graphics etc look incredibly poor.

The pricing is silly for 4 day games.

The other issue is the lack of 4 day games during the school holidays.
Seems like a time when parents could do with a cost effective entertainment for the whole day, bring a picnic and the kids always seem excited about going onto the pitch during the breaks

I dont think it's snobbery at all.

For me, the The Hundred epitomises the incompetence of the ECB. They've dropped the ball with our domestic T20 competition and have seen it fall way behind the IPL and Big Bash. They're jealous of the "product" that these other competions have and want their own version. I don't really begrudge that desire. But if they wanted a "product" to rival those other competitions, its so clear that it needs to be shown on domestic tv if it's to get a large broad appeal and reach new fans.

Unfortunately the tv deals they've already struck mean they can't show the domestic T20. So their own incompetence put them in a situation where they can't have a big T20 competition like India or Australia. Instead they've had to create this bastardised version of cricket because they can show that on domestic tv. They have the gall to tell us that it's a great idea, when really its the only way they've been able to dig themselves out of the hole that their other crappy ideas dug for them.

Basically this is correct. ECB missed the opportunity to make money with T20 so have brought this in. Only reason this format exists is to make ECB some royalties money.

Just watched the first hundred game. I have to say that I enjoyed the game.

Good quality cricket from both sides and the game was in the balance right to the end.

It didn't feel any different from a T20 match. Not sure I like the lack of overs.

My only problems with this format is I'm a life long sussex fan and sussex are not in the competition. I might be rooting for the Brave, but they are not my team.

Not sure the format adds anymore than the current T20.

I watched some. It is just t20 but five ball overs. Oh and it is harder to figure out who is ahead in the game because you have to figure out your own way of breaking the game into segments. When you have runs per over it is obvious if the rate is going up. I am numerate and I have to think about it. Not sure how this makes it easier for kids.

It wasn't quite for me, but my 10 year old boy and my wife both came into the lounge, interest piqued, at different times. My lad then asked me to take him to a game.

So you have to say, it's clearly done its job if my experience is anything to go by.
