I've been trying to read it for about 5 years and am only half way through, really heavy on description. At one point there is about 5 pages describing eating a bowl of stew.

I've never finished it either. Maybe I'll have another go soon.

Not sure if it is a great novel but it is one of my favourite first lines:

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold

Probably a bit of a giveaway.......

I also know that - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Very memorable - Clockwork Orange.

"It was love at first sight."

The second sentence is a bit of a giveaway, but as the first sentence is so vague, I'll give you a word in the second sentence - "chaplain".

I didn't really get on with this one , but I know it's got a fair few fans. ( First published in 1966)

"At the hour of the hot spring sunset two citizens appeared at the Patriarch's Ponds "

Quite right. Michael Morpurgo is a fantastic writer, and it's sad that most adults miss out on his work.

There is no reason why they should. I read a lot of kids books - owning a bookshop means that I have to advise parents whether books are suitable or not, so it is a good excuse, but I see no reason why adults cannot read books aimed at kids. They are often excellent stories.
