I've been trying to read it for about 5 years and am only half way through, really heavy on description. At one point there is about 5 pages describing eating a bowl of stew.
I disappeared on the night before my twelfth birthday.

Quite right. Michael Morpurgo is a fantastic writer, and it's sad that most adults miss out on his work.
