In Mexico in January, the football mad barman had never heard of us. Until I mentioned we'd just battered Liverpool.... "Aaaah - Brigg-ton.... brilliant! brilliant!"

Met some Argentinians in Qatar too who'd been following Albion because of Mac Allister - but they seemed more excited about the potential for him to join Tottenham unfortunately.

I was in Austria when we were in the Championship and our group bumped into a group of German skiers in a bar. The usual football question of "who do you support" was asked of me and when I said Brighton there was a quizzical look and a follow up question " which Premier League club". I assured him that I and most of our group supported Brighton alone and assured them that we would be a Premier League club within 5 years.
I took off my yellow away kit shirt and presented it to them and made them honorary Brighton fans.
Never seen or heard of them again but I'm sure we have a few Germans watching our results.
If any of you are one of those Germans; can I have my shirt back please.

This happened to me last week with the Spanish students sharing the language school with us. Their local team was Hercules Alicante and some of the kids supported them but also Barcelona or Real Madrid. This isn't such a thing in England with our strong lower league structure.

In Spain pretty much everybody supports Madrid or Barcelona along with perhaps their local club.

This is true even of supporters of big clubs like Sevilla or Betis. I find it bizarre.

A team of students from the USA have been working on IT systems in a charity in Camden with which I volunteer as part of an international outreach programme. One of them is an Albion fan. She has no ties with the area just liked what she heard and saw about the club and knew all about our history and the club's culture.

Usually get a couple of adverts for those pop up on my Facebook feed at the start of every season. Club seems to close them down pretty quickly tho. Really need to scale up production of replica kit for the overseas market somehow. Maybe via local licensing deals or something?

He was wearing a Chelsea shirt at the time, so told him to bin that and gave him mine so he stood out a bit more whilst touting for business on the beach.
Plus just been to Bali, whilst getting a shave the local lad was well versed in Mitoma, Caicedo, and Mac.

A little anecdote to this story.
Bearing in mind this guy befriended us on the beach and offered to take us round the island, have street food and go back to his shop in shanty town a lot cheaper than guided tours.
Picked us up in the morning smoking a spliff, then did the tour, which to be fair was great, and we ended back at his shop. Had a few beers at his shop, whilst dudes were coming in buying weed off him, then later that day dropped us off.
Next day I googled his name whilst laying on the beach and what pops up?

Spoke to a few people in Tenerife about footy and all they said ( mostly arse and Liverpool fans) how well we play and how our team will be broken up in the summer and de Zerbi will be off to a “ big club” around Europe.

one palace fan was incensed we are signing so many South Americans which “ does nothing for the English team”. I politely told him that the palace twat Southgate doesn’t pick Brighton players anyway so who gives a monkeys!

Most, if not all replicas are made in SE Asia. The problem is, the fake shirts are usually made in the same factories as the official ones, they just leave via the back door to the tourist markets etc.

My cousin is an Ipswich fan and one time he had to entertain an American client. The guy asked what soccer team he supported, so to avoid explaining he said his second team - Spurs (as he had lived in the area for several decades. The American then revealed he had been in the US airforce in East Anglia as a young man and had watched Ipswich a lot and became a life long fan. My cousin felt such a Judas that he just nodded and felt shame burn through his very being.

The whole concept of "second team" is not something I understand at all. Once a club is in your blood, through hell or high water, that's it!

Had several conversations with locals in Thailand last month…….as soon as they know you’re English, they usually want to talk about football. We’re not under the radar any more based on what they knew (and virtually all were either Liverpool or Man U ‘fans’) - the Mitoma effect has rippled throughout Asia for sure.
