The Independent published their 20 greatest singles of 1979 earlier this week, which were:

3. Transmission - Joy Division
4. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
5. Good Times - Chic
6. Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello and the Attractions
7. Heart Of Glass - Blondie
8. Are 'Friends' Electric - Tubeway Army
9. Gangsters - The Specials
10. Don't Stop 'till You Get Enough - Michael Jackson
11. Up The Junction - Squeeze
12. Rapper's Delight - Sugarhill Gang
13. Message In a Bottle - The Police
14. Brass In Pocket - The Pretenders
15. Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) - Pink Floyd
16. Is She Really Going Our With Him? - Joe Jackson
17. Making Plans For Nigel - XTC
18. Waiting For An Alibi - Thin Lizzy
19. Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe
20. I Don't Like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats

So which singles shouldn't be on the list and what the glaring omissions ?

Pretty much like all those singles listed, whether they were the best or not is another thing.

Not a bad list, though I'd have gone for One More Time (Joe Jackson), maybe Accidents Will Happen (Elvis Costello) and added in Harmony in My Head (Buzzcocks). Also, to my mind this particular gem from The Jam is even better than Eton Rifles ...

Substitute the abominable Gloria Gaynor for Ian Dury’s Rhythm stick for a start

It's a good list. Probably no. 17, Making Plans For Nigel - XTC. I don't mind it, but it's out of its league there.

Didn't even reach the charts, but still a great single

One of my favourite ever songs is on this album.....Heaven. I prefer the live version on the Stop Making Sense deluxe version though. Such a beautiful song.
