Brilliant topic.

I'll have a good think and get back to you.

For starters

Hamlet should have got art direction ahead of English Patient (which didn't deserve anything)

Fiennes was brilliant in that as well as was Binoche and the score definately deserved the Oscar

In 1994 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Shawshank Redemption' and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' were all nominated for best picture. They all lost to 'Forrest Gump'. Shoddy film, rip off of Zelig with hacky references to other, better films, but the sort of self agrandising tod that America laps up.
I rated Forrest Gump very much but Pulp Fiction was better for sure

As I said Ralph Fiennes not winning for Schindler's List is unfathomable. It was one of the greatest acting performances of all time at age 32 in his first major film after Spielberg saw him as Heathcliffe in Wuthering Heights

I'll give it another go sometime soon.

Didn't get it when it came out and watched it again during lockdown.

Not convinced but happy to change my mind.
I thought it was great but I know a lot of people that thought it was overlong and boring

A comedian once said of The English Patient;

You don’t have to be English to enjoy it but you do have to be f***ing patient.

🤣

ET - The Extratestrial should have won best film over Gandhi even Richard Attenborough said so

While I am on a roll Liam Neeson should have won for Schindler's List. That film should have swept the board than that poor 7 Oscars

Not sure I agree with that but Gandhi was made for Oscars. No way it wasn’t going to win.
Attenborough himself said ET should have won but Gandhi is a great film

Blade Runner should have got best visual effects (E.T.) that year though... And art direction (Ghandi)
The realization of ET was incredible and the meticulous work done to achieve it
