Our midfield is moder, hinch, baleba, wieffer, Milner, ayari, Moran. + Gomez in jan. We are an attack minded centre mid short that’s it.

Lacking a lot of the creativity and progressive passing we got from Gilmour and Gross

I'm curious to see how Hurzeler has the squad line up with everyone healthy. Seems like Enciso, Facu and maybe even Sarmiento could see some time at CM alongside Wieffer and Baleba

Hinshelwood seems best utilized as a RWB in absence of a better option, would love for us to add one so that he can also play inside

Wiffer, Baleba and Enciso/Facu/Hinshelwood seems like the best mix of traits left after the expected departures

And Undav? Looks like his desired move might be in jeopardy - 25M euros bid not enough, apparently, but do we really want a player who doesn't want to be here?

Ferguson and March are/were doing light solo training and were pictured in club social before Japan

Gilmour (and Moder) had returned to training before Japan

I think Dunk back next week ?

Yep. So, nobody was missing unexpectedly. I suppose, as he travelled to Japan (but didn't play) you could expect Gilmour to be there, but perhaps he had a niggle that he picked up whilst in Tokyo.

I’m wary of reading too much into just two pre-season appearances, but I was impressed with his awareness and passing.

If that’s his normal level and not a rare fluke then I would have him in the first team squad in a heartbeat.
Failed in championship. Shocked if he makes the squad

Surely euros players are back next week. Cannot understand why dunk is not with the group and training with bloody declan rice in Marbella, seems stupid.
he's on a three week holiday. Last one he'll get til next May. if he wants to combine that with some extra personal training and hanging out with Declan Rice then guess thats up to him !
Club presumably will have said. . Come back on Monday in time for training, Villarreal and Everton (A) .

Yes but that was league one opposition

I feel you’re being a little dismissive of the J-League there.

Yes, my concern around him would be his physical stature, but that’s something that can be easily fixed in the gym, whereas an instinctive knowledge of where your teammates are and the ability to thread the ball through to them is an absolute gift from the footballing gods.

If we don't sign anyone else for midfield then I reckon Hinch might be put in the middle in his preferred role with Yalcouye/Ayari or Baleba as alternatives. Not too shabby IMO.

Right back though still definitely needed!

Maybe

We could take that risk of there were other proven top half EPL CMs in our squad. But as it stands we only have one in grandpa milner if billy goes.
This "proven top half EPL CM" - is that the only way to judge our squad. ?
On that basis then Wieffer who is a Dutch international, with Europa League experience and 100+ Eridivisie appearances, young and with plenty of suitors and took Feyenoord to runners up last season would come up short to i dunno Will Hughes. Who is clearly a proven CM - he made 30 appearances for a top half EPL side in 23/24 didn't he. ?
