The Grand has always been shit. Not sure why people would waste their money on it, when there are much nicer hotels to be had.

Its the Seaview isn't it. It wasn't always shit. it really has gone down hill but then again so has Brighton. All rather sad really

I disagree mate, I don't think Brighton has gone downhill. It's that problem of nostalgia, when you are away from somewhere for awhile, it always seems better in your memory than it actually is when you return!

I disagree. One must realise how much better Brighton has got since the 80s/90s, shirley? All that drab concrete. The seafront was a disgrace.

I am back in Brighton for the weekend, visiting the folks and realised how cool Brighton really is. Something that is easy to take for granted when one lives here.

How do you feel Brighton has gone downhill?

I agree with you, the fact there is actually a nice new library where there just used to be a massive derelict site is also something to be added to the list.

If only Brighton Centre/Kingswest building had been demolished a few years back.

Thats a fair point but i have come down quite often in the years I have been away. It just seems a bit shabby now. I am not often critical of places when I come way from Coventry for obvious reasons

Thats a fair point but i have come down quite often in the years I have been away. It just seems a bit shabby now. I am not often critical of places when I come way from Coventry for obvious reasons

I think certain times bring out the worst in places, such as a bank holiday.

I've had times like that mind you, coming down from Brighton station and seeing alot of pretentious attention seeking twats out and about, making me think, I can't be arsed with Brighton anymore.

Then I'll come down and it will be a really sunny day and people will seem friendly and chirpy and I'll have a lovely walk down the Undercliff or something.

It can go both ways but I think everything gets a bit dirtier on a bank holiday, but then again, that's what Brighton used to be famous for

Brighton is having its golden decade in my opinion. Unique, wonderful city.

The Grand Hotel on the other hand is only so-so nowadays. Took my old mum for lunch
there on her 80th last year and it was moderate at best...apart from the view of course.

Agree. Nice wide open public space, as is the pedestrianised area in New Road by the Theatre Royal. Reckon that's the way forward and what with the creeping squeezing out of the private car in favour of widening the pavements being snuck in by the council, then reckon won't be too long before we have a fully pedestrianised town centre to be proud of.

And yes dougdeep, I do appreciate that will pose problems for delivery drivers. But I don't care.

Both Mrs P and I adore The Grand. It's got a sort of almost "seediness" if you will, that sums the decadence of Brighton quite nicely.
